The Way We Were composer Marvin Hamlisch dies aged 68

Marvin Hamlisch, the award-winning composer of films such as The Way We Were and The Sting has died aged 68.

His death was confirmed last night by a family spokesman who revealed he had passed away following a short illness.

He worked on the music side of the industry for four decades which included writing music for film and the stage. His other film credits included Save the Tiger, Sophie’s Choice and The Spy Who Loved Me.

In 1972, he claimed two Oscar wins for his score and song ‘The Way We Were‘ from the renowned romantic drama of the same name before winning a third Oscar in 1973 for his collaborated score of The Sting with Scott Joplin as well as winning Golden Globes. He was also one of only eleven individuals to win awards at the Oscars, Tonys, Emmys and Grammys.

He then went on to compose the soundtrack for the Broadway hit A Chorus Line.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years.
