Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II struggles to deal with the Charles and Diana crisis in The Crown (Series 5) trailer

A long-awaited trailer has finally landed for the fifth series of The Crown.

The latest instalment of Netflix’s successful royal soap opera continues to follow the political and personal events that shaped the reign of the recently-deceased British monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Backed by The Verve’s iconic tune ‘Bittersweet Symphony’, the footage shows the Royal Family battle to stay relevant in ’90s Britain, only to face a series of challenges that are spearheaded by the media war waged between Prince (now King) Charles and Princess Diana.

For this new series, BAFTA-winning actress Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake, Pride) succeeds previous stars Claire Foy and Olivia Colman as the late Queen alongside a number of familiar faces.

The crucial roles of Charles and Diana are filled by Dominic West (The Wire, Appropriate Adult) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Night Manager, Widows) while Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, The Two Popes) and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread, Mum) portray Prince Philip and Princess Margaret respectively.

The rest of the starry ensemble cast also includes Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Elementary) as John Major, Olivia Williams (An Education, The Ghost Writer) as Camilla Parker Bowles, Khalid Abdalla (United 93, Assassin’s Creed) as Dodi Fayed, Claudia Harrison (Humans, Delicious) as Princess Anne, James Murray (Suspect, McDonald & Dodds) as Prince Andrew, Sam Woolf (Call the Midwife, Strike) as Prince Edward, Marcia Warren (Leap Year, Vicious) as the Queen Mother, Flora Montgomery (A Very English Scandal, Bloodlands) as Norma Major, Bertie Carvel (Doctor Foster, The Tragedy of Macbeth) as Tony Blair, Lydia Leonard (Last Christmas, Gentleman Jack) as Cherie Blair, Salim Daw (Tyrant, Fauda) as Mohamed Al-Fayed, Prasanna Puwanarajah (Doctor Foster, Patrick Melrose) as Martin Bashir, Natascha McElhone (Ronin, Californication) as Penelope Knatchbull and Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights, Hot Fuzz) as Peter Townsend.

The Crown’s fifth series will arrive on Netflix from 9 November.
