EE BAFTAs: Oppenheimer bags magnificent seven while Poor Things impresses with five wins

Oppenheimer’s road to Oscar glory is starting to take shape after dominating at this year’s EE BAFTA Film Awards.

The film, which explores the life and career of renowned physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his work on building the first nuclear bomb, took home seven awards including the coveted Best Film prize.

Additionally, Irish star Cillian Murphy picked up the Best Leading Actor gong for his portrayal of Oppenheimer while co-star Robert Downey Jr. landed his second BAFTA win for his supporting turn as government official Lewis Strauss.

Once again, visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan bolstered his hopes of a first Oscar success by nabbing Best Director while the film also claimed prizes for Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score for composer Ludwig Göransson.

The period comedy Poor Things enjoyed a strong evening with five accolades including a second Best Leading Actress BAFTA for Emma Stone as a recently-resurrected Victorian woman who seeks to find her own sexual awakening. The film also secured technical wins for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects.

Meanwhile, Da’Vine Joy Randolph cemented her Oscar frontrunner status by taking home Best Supporting Actress for her emotional turn as a grieving cook in The Holdovers. The film itself also nabbed a win in the Best Casting category.

Another big winner on the night was the Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest which claimed three prizes including triumphs in both Outstanding British Film and Best Film Not in the English Language. It also overcame strong competition from Oppenheimer to land the Best Sound award.

Elsewhere, the satirical comedy American Fiction and the French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall were the key winners of Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay respectively while the Hayao Miyazaki animation The Boy and the Heron was named Best Animated Film ahead of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Other films to prevail included 20 Days in Mariupol (Best Documentary Film), Jellyfish and Lobster (Best British Short Film), Crab Day (Best British Short Animation), and Earth Mama (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

The EE Rising Star Award category produced a surprise as rising British starlet Mia McKenna-Bruce clinched the win ahead of the likes of Ayo Edebiri and Jacob Elordi.

Finally, the BAFTA Fellowship was presented to British actress Samantha Morton (Minority Report, In America, Control) who dedicated her award to every child in care and poverty.

However, it was a night to forget for a number of prolific films as the hit fantasy comedy Barbie, the crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon, and the music-based drama Maestro all went home empty-handed despite multiple nominations.

On the ceremony front, Scottish actor David Tennant shone in his first gig as BAFTA host while comeback queen Sophie Ellis-Bextor performed a show-stopping rendition of her chart-topping hit ‘Murder on the Dance Floor’ after its recent resurgence through the film Saltburn.

Additionally, actress and singer Hannah Waddingham also delivered with a heartfelt rendition of ‘Time After Time’  during the In Memoriam segment.
