2014 SAG Award nominations: 12 Years a Slave and Breaking Bad lead the way in film and TV categories

The 2013-14 awards season is well in full swing after the Screen Actor’s Guild announced their list of contenders across film and television.

On the cinematic front, the historical drama 12 Years a Slave leads the way with four nods, including the prestigious Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize.

The film, which focuses on how African-American man Solomon Northop endured a twelve-year hardship after being kidnapped and sold into slavery, also bagged three acting nominations for its cast members.

British star Chiwetel Ejiofor is in contention for the Leading Male Actor prize for his role as Northop, while co-stars Michael Fassbender and newcomer Lupita Nyong’o are nominated in the supporting categories.

Meanwhile, the family drama August: Osage County and autobiographical dramas The Butler and Dallas Buyers Club all receive three noms apiece, including a place on the Outstanding Performance by a Cast shortlist, which is completed by the crime comedy American Hustle.

From those films, there are some talented names seeking to take charge in the acting categories, including Meryl Streep (August: Osage County), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), Oprah Winfrey (The Butler), and the current Best Actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle).

Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett competes in the Leading Female Actor field for her performance in the Woody Allen drama Blue Jasmine, with her competition consisting of Sandra Bullock (Gravity) and British duo Dame Judi Dench (Philomena) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks).

In the Leading Male Actor line-up, Tom Hanks is shortlisted for his role as Captain Richard Phillips in the factual thriller Captain Phillips and is joined by veteran Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and surprise nominee Forest Whitaker (The Butler).

Elsewhere, the late James Gandolfini receives a posthumous Supporting Male Actor nomination for his role in the romantic comedy Enough Said but faces tough competition from early Oscar frontrunner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

The rest of the notable acting contenders are June Squibb (Nebraska), Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), and Daniel Brühl (Rush).

Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble award is competed by the survival drama All is Lost, the action sequel Fast & Furious 6, the war thriller Lone Survivor, the sports drama Rush and the X-Men spinoff The Wolverine.

As to be expected, a number of key stars were overlooked for awards, including Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Robert Redford (All is Lost), Tom Hanks (Saving Mr. Banks), and American Hustle trio Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper.

The 20th Screen Actor Guild Awards will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 18 January 2014.
