In the aftermath of yesterday’s Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, the Golden Globes have also revealed their list of contenders for film and television.
Starting with the small-screen categories, Netflix’s House of Cards leads the drama field with four nods, including a place on the revamped Best Television Series (Drama) shortlist.
The American remake of the British political thriller series also scored lead acting noms for chief cast members Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, while co-star Corey Stoll competes in the supporting categories.
However, House of Cards has the misfortune of coming up against the acclaimed final series of AMC’s Breaking Bad as well as ITV’s Downton Abbey, CBS’s The Good Wife, and Showtime’s Masters of Sex.
The new-look Television Series (Drama) line-up also means no places on the list for the likes of Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland or Mad Men.
For Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston is hoping to finally win his first Best Actor (Drama) accolade for his swansong turn as drug dealer Walter White, while co-star Aaron Paul contests the Supporting Actor category for his role as Jesse Pinkman.
With former category winners Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) and Jon Hamm (Mad Men) absent from the shortlist, the rest of the Actor (Drama) line-up is contested by new contenders Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex) and James Spader (The Blacklist).
Meanwhile, the notable snub of Claire Danes (Homeland) brings an intriguing battle to the Best Actress (Drama) group that consists of previous winner Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and category newcomers Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) and Kerry Washington (Scandal).
Over in the comedy line-ups, the love is spread between a variety of sitcoms, including ABC’s Modern Family and Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine with two nods each.
Both programmes compete in the Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical) category alongside CBS’s The Big Bang Theory, HBO’s Girls, and NBC’s Parks and Recreation.
On the acting side of things, returning Golden Globe co-host Amy Poehler is nominated in the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) field for her role in Parks and Recreation and faces stern competition from last year’s category winner Lena Dunham (Girls) as well as current Emmy holder Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep).
In Best Actor (Comedy/Musical), Michael J. Fox receives a welcome back nod for his starring role in NBC’s The Michael J. Fox Show, and is up against the likes of previous winners Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Don Cheadle (House of Lies) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory).
In the limited series field, the multi-Emmy-winning HBO television film Behind the Candelabra stands tall with four noms, including the prestigious Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television accolade.
The film, which explores the relationship between pianist Liberace and his younger lover Scott Thorson, also receives double Best Actor (Mini-Series/TV Movie) nods for chief cast members Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, while co-star Rob Lowe competes in the Supporting Actor category.
Elsewhere, Starz duo Dancing on the Edge and The White Queen both picked up three mentions including a place on the Mini-Series/TV Movie shortlist alongside FX’s American Horror Story: Coven, and Sundance TV’s Top of the Lake.
Having earned film nominations for their respective performances in 12 Years a Slave and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, British stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (Dancing on the Edge) and Idris Elba (Luther) go head-to-head in the Best Actor (Mini-Series/TV Movie) category.
Meanwhile, British actresses Helena Bonham Carter (Burton & Taylor) and Dame Helen Mirren (Phil Spector) compete in the Best Actress (Mini-Series/TV Movie) field while Jacqueline Bisset (Dancing on the Edge) and Janet McTeer (The White Queen) are also acknowledged in the supporting line-ups.
The rest of the notable acting contenders include Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen), Elisabeth Moss (Top of the Lake), Al Pacino (Phil Spector), Hayden Panettiere (Nashville), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Sofía Vergara (Modern Family), and Jon Voight (Ray Donovan).
As to be expected, there was disappointment for multiple stars as the likes of Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and Dame Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) were completely ignored.
The 71st Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 12 January 2014 with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returning as co-hosts.
