After a difficult couple of weeks for the film industry, the Oscar race is starting to take shape after BAFTA unveiled their list of film nominations for 2025.
The papal thriller Conclave tops this year’s tally with a mighty twelve nods, with the daring crime musical Emilia Pérez continuing its impressive awards run with eleven mentions.
Both films compete in a competitive Best Film line-up that is also contested by Anora, The Brutalist and A Complete Unknown.
Conclave, which centres on a cardinal tasked with searching for the next Pope, also scored a Best Director nod for BAFTA-winning auteur Edward Berger, while seasoned stars Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini are also acknowledged in the Leading Actor and Supporting Actress categories.
The big-screen adaptation of the Robert Harris novel is also in contention for several technical awards including editing, cinematography, and costume design.
In the case of Emilia Pérez, the critically-diverse Spanish-language film picked up a hat-trick of acting noms for its ensemble with trans star Karla Sofía Gascón up for Leading Actress, while co-stars Selena Gomez and recent Golden Globe winner Zoe Saldaña lock horns in the Supporting Actress field.
Additionally, French filmmaker Jacques Audiard is shortlisted for both his directing and writing, while the musical is also up for Best Film Not in the English Language.
Elsewhere, the period epic The Brutalist bagged a solid nine nominations, with three cast members name-checked by BAFTA voters.
Recent Globe winner Adrien Brody will look to bolster his hopes of a second Oscar win after landing a Leading Actor nod, while co-stars Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce are up for the supporting awards.
The dark comedy Anora also made an impact with the British Film Academy after garnering seven nods, including a Leading Actress mention for Mikey Madison, who is also in contention for the EE Rising Star Award.
The Los Angeles-born starlet is on the shortlist for the public-voted accolade alongside British trio Marisa Abela, David Jonsson and Nabhaan Rizwan.
Meanwhile, the music-based factual drama A Complete Unknown continued its recent surge, with Timothée Chalamet landing another Leading Actor nomination for his portrayal of music legend Bob Dylan.
Despite missing out Best Film nods, the sci-fi sequel Dune: Part Two and the hit musical Wicked both performed admirably with seven mentions apiece.
In the case of Wicked, the big-screen adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical picked up a further two acting nods for ‘popular’ stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
After her memorable win at the Golden Globes, Demi Moore finds herself on the Leading Actress shortlist for her performance in the horror satire The Substance, with British performer Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths) and Irish star Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun) among her fellow nominees.
Meanwhile, Hugh Grant earns a Leading Actor nod for his turn in the psychological horror Heretic and is joined in a strong line-up by Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice).
The rest of the notable acting contenders include Yura Borisov (Anora), Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) and Best Supporting Actor frontrunner Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain).
Elsewhere, the fact-based Irish comedy Kneecap enjoyed a decent showing by garnering six nominations, include Best Film Not in the English Language and more ironically, Outstanding British Film.
The film faces mighty competition from an impressive group of other flicks including the war drama Blitz, the historical epic Gladiator II and the Aardman Animations sequel Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
Having impressed critics and audiences over the Christmas period, Wallace & Gromit is also up for Best Animated Film and the newly-formed Best Children’s and Family Film accolade, with Flow and The Wild Robot among its rivals.
Meanwhile, Willow and Harry Potter star Warwick Davis is the recipient of this year’s BAFTA Fellowship award for his “trailblazing work” as an actor and for his charity supporting people with dwarfism.
As to be expected, BAFTA omitted a number of noteworthy performances including Daniel Craig (Queer), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Stanley Tucci (Conclave), Kate Winslet (Lee), and (for the umpteenth time) Denzel Washington (Gladiator II).
The BAFTA nominations come at a difficult time for the industry, with the organisers of several US awards ceremonies, including the Oscars, pushing their own announcements back and holding more low-key events due to the wildfires in Los Angeles.
In the meantime, the 78th EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will be held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday 16 February, with Scottish star David Tennant on hosting duties for the second year in a row.
