The sun certainly didn’t going down on Tom Hardy at the moment….

The British star has been working ridiculously hard in the film industry in recent years but having produced exceptional performances in Bronson (2008), Inception (2010), Warrior (2011), Lawless (2012) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), his film CV is set to expand further with his latest big-screen role.

It has been confirmed that the BAFTA-winning actor has been cast in the lucrative role of British singing legend Elton John in the upcoming musical biopic Rocketman.

The film will focus on John’s life beginning with his childhood and eventually showing him at his very peak when he sang famous hits like ‘Your Song’, ‘I Guess That’s Why They Call it the Blues’, ‘Don’t Go Breaking my Heart’, ‘The Circle of Life’ and ‘Candle in the Wind’.

John will re-record his famous music for the film which is hoping for a Mamma Mia-style reaction from audiences in getting up and singing along to the tunes.

Rocket Pictures CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw have his reaction about the casting:

“Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life. We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board, and equally excited to be in the hands of Peter Schlessel and the entire Focus Features team.”

Newcomer Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman on Earth) will direct the film with the script being penned by Oscar-nominated writer Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, War Horse).

Filming is set to begin on Rocketman in Autumn 2014.

In the meantime, Mr Hardy will hope to still be standing when production starts especially after recently working on new films Locke, Child 44 and Mad Max 4.
