Timothée Chalamet plays a young Willy Wonka in official trailer for Wonka

A magical trailer has premiered for the upcoming musical fantasy Wonka.

Directed and co-written by Paul King (Paddington, Paddington 2), the film serves as a prequel to Roald Dahl’s beloved novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its wacky leading character.

Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Dune) steps into the eccentric shoes of Wonka in a role previously played on-screen by Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), and Johnny Depp in the Tim Burton-directed remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).

Co-written by King and his Paddington collaborator Simon Farnaby (Ghosts, The Phantom of the Open), The film will follow a young Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory as well as his introduction to the Oompa-Loompas.

Rising starlet Calah Lane (Hollywood, This is Us) co-stars with Chalamet alongside a star-studded support cast that includes Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele, Schmigadoon!), Paterson Joseph (Peep Show, Vigil), Matt Lucas (Little Britain, Alice in Wonderlnad), Matthew Baynton (The Wrong Mans, Ghosts), Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, Paddington series), Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder, Mr. Bean), Jim Carter (Shakespeare in Love, Downton Abbey), Tom Davis (Plebs, King Gary), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure, The White Lotus), Rich Fulcher (Disenchantment, Marriage Story), Rakhee Thakrar (EastEnders, Sex Education), Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Mary Poppins Returns, Justice League), Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, Heartstopper) and BAFTA-winner Hugh Grant (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Paddington 2).

UK audiences will get the chance to return to a world of pure imagination when Wonka is released on 15 December.
