The Dark Knight Rises named amongst AFI’s Top 10 Films of 2012

Another day, another awards announcement as the AFI (American Film Institute) became the next big group to reveal their films of the year via a Top Ten list.

The usual suspects such as Argo, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty popped up on the list with Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook also figuring. There was also some reprieve for struggling contenders Django Unchained, Les Miserables and Life of Pi while the big surprise saw Christopher Nolan’s climatic comic-book blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises nab a place on the list.

The AFI tend to nominate the odd blockbuster or rom-com on their annual lists with previous films such as About A Boy (2002), Spiderman 2 (2004), Knocked Up (2007) and Iron Man (2008) being the unusual examples.

However there was no place on the list for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master or Robert Zemeckis’s Flight. Non-American productions such as Amour and Skyfall were ineligible for consideration.

The full list is below:

  • ARGO
  • BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD
  • THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
  • DJANGO UNCHAINED
  • LES MISERABLES
  • LIFE OF PI
  • LINCOLN
  • MOONRISE KINGDOM
  • SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
  • ZERO DARK THIRTY

The TV Awards were also announced with major US shows such as Breaking Bad, Homeland, Mad Men, Modern Family and The Walking Dead being the stand-out recipients. American Horror Story, Game Change, Game of Thrones, Girls and Louie rounded off the impressive list of nominees though surprisingly there was no room for Boardwalk Empire or The Newsroom.

The full list for that group is below:

  • AMERICAN HORROR STORY
  • BREAKING BAD
  • GAME CHANGE
  • GAME OF THRONES
  • GIRLS
  • HOMELAND
  • LOUIE
  • MAD MEN
  • MODERN FAMILY
  • THE WALKING DEAD
