Skyfall becomes highest-grossing film of all time in UK

It’s safe to say for most people that 007 has come back with a bang! Having earned terrific reviews, Skyfall has attracted large audiences to come and see James Bond celebrate 50 years, leading to box-office history being achieved here in the UK.

The 23rd instalment of the much-celebrated action franchise has become the highest-grossing film in UK box-office history after taking in £94,277,612 within 40 days! The previous record holder, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar (2009), grossed £94,025,632 within 11 months. A record completely shattered by Mr Bond!

Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli issued a statement speaking of their delight for the film’s extraordinary success.

“We’re overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest-grossing film of all time. We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, who have contributed to its success.”

Peter Taylor, the managing director of Sony Pictures Releasing UK, also gave his opinion of the news.

“We are delighted that cinema-goers have so enthusiastically embraced Skyfall in such an incredible way. It seems particularly fitting in 2012 that the latest James Bond adventure should become the highest-grossing movie ever, marking the 50th anniversary of one of our truly iconic cultural characters in record-breaking style.”

Sums it all up for us Peter! The film opened in 587 cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 26th October, and is still on general release which means the gross will continue to rise.

Excellent work 007!
