2020 SAG Award nominations: Bombshell and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel amongst leaders in film and TV categories

After the fallout from Monday’s Golden Globe nominations, the Screen Actors Guild have now offered up their list of contenders across film and television for 2020.

On the cinematic front, the Fox News-based drama Bombshell, the crime epic The Irishman and the period epic Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood all share the lead with four nods apiece.

The trio all made the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture shortlist, alongside the war satire Jojo Rabbit and the Palme d’Or-winning South Korean thriller Parasite.

Despite early struggles with the guilds, Bombshell performed well with stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie all nominated for their performances. Theron competes in the Leading Female Actor category, while Robbie and surprise nominee Kidman go head-to-head for the Supporting Female Actor gong.

Meanwhile, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood both picked up double acting nods AND mentions in the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble category.

Irishman stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci go up against Hollywood’s Brad Pitt in the Supporting Male Actor field, while Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated in Leading Male Actor along with fellow Oscar contenders Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker).

The one negative for The Irishman was another key snub for leading man Robert De Niro, who is actually due to receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award that night. Ooer…

Elsewhere, Scarlett Johansson enjoyed a solid day as she landed double mentions in Leading Female Actor AND Supporting Female Actor for her performances in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.

Johansson contests the Leading Female Actor category alongside Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Lupita Nyong’o (Us) and Oscar favourite Renée Zellweger (Judy), while her Supporting Female Actor rivals includes Marriage Story co-star Laura Dern and comeback queen Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers).

There were a number of surprise nominees this year, with British duo Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari) and Taron Egerton (Rocketman) making the Leading Male Actor line-up, while Jamie Foxx is recognised in Supporting Male Actor for his role in the legal drama Just Mercy.

As well as The Irishman and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, the rest of the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble field is completed by the Marvel epic Avengers: Endgame, the factual sports drama Ford v Ferrari, and the comic-book thriller Joker.

Once again, there were some crucial snubs, with Little Women completely overlooked having sent its screener late to the voting group. Therefore, there were zero mentions for stars Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh.

Other Oscars contenders to be completely ignored include Awkwafina (The Farewell), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes), Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name), and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).

The 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 19 January 2020.

In the television categories, the second series of Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has taken pole position with four nominations.

The period comedy is shortlisted for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, while stars Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein and Tony Shalhoub are all nominated in the acting categories.

However, it faces tough competition from the multi-Emmy winning BBC series Fleabag, which is also in contention for Outstanding Ensemble (Comedy). Once again, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is up for Female Actor (Comedy) while co-star Andrew Scott competes in the Male Actor (Comedy) field.

The rest of the Outstanding Ensemble (Comedy) line-up is competed by HBO’s Barry, Netflix’s The Kominsky Method and CBC Television’s Schitt’s Creek.

In the acting line-ups, The Kominsky Method veterans Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin are up for Male Actor (Drama) alongside Emmy winner Bill Hader (Barry) while the other Female Actor (Comedy) contenders include Christina Applegate (Dead to Me) and Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek).

In the drama fields, Netflix’s The Crown and the maligned final series of HBO’s Game of Thrones scored three key mentions.

Both programmes are included on the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series shortlist alongside HBO’s Big Little Lies, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Netflix’s Stranger Things.

The Crown stars Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter compete in a versatile Female Actor (Drama) line-up for their respective portrayals of royal monarch Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret and are joined by BAFTA and Emmy winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show).

The Male Actor (Drama) field sees previous category winner Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) lock horns with David Harbour (Stranger Things) and The Morning Show duo Steve Carell and Billy Crudrup.

In the limited categories, British performers Jared Harris and Emily Watson earn acting noms for their performances in the fact-based Sky Original miniseries Chernobyl.

Harris is joined in a competitive Male Actor (Television Movie or Limited Series) line-up alongside Mahershala Ali (True Detective), Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon) and Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us).

The fifth slot is held by Russell Crowe for his portrayal of disgraced FOX News CEO Roger Ailes in Showtime’s The Loudest Voice. In a unique scenario, this nod coincides with the nominations haul received for Bombshell in the film categories, with both projects depicting the fall of Ailes.

Meanwhile, Emmy winner Michelle Williams earns a Female Actor (TV Movie/Limited Series) mention for her turn as Broadway star Gwen Verdon in FX’s Fosse/Verdon with Toni Collette (Unbelievable) and The Act duo Patricia Arquette and Joey King also acknowledged.

Finally, seven-time category winner Game of Thrones is looking to score one final success in the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble field, where it competes against GLOW, Stranger Things, The Walking Dead and Watchmen.

The 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 19 January 2020.
