With the 2010s almost over, awards season is finally in full swing, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announcing their list of contenders for 2020.
The family drama Marriage Story, which centres on a former couple struggling through a coast-to-coast divorce, holds a strong lead with six nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama).
Central stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are both shortlisted for Best Actor (Drama) and Best Actress (Drama) respectively, while co-star Laura Dern is up for Supporting Actress.
Despite being snubbed for his directing, Noah Baumbach earns a Best Screenplay nod, while renowned composer Randy Newman is in contention for Best Original Score.
There was also a strong showing for the Martin Scorsese’s crime epic The Irishman, which received five nods, including a mention on the Best Motion Picture (Drama) shortlist.
Once again, Scorsese is nominated for Best Director, while veteran stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci go head-to-head in the Best Supporting Actor category. However, leading man Robert De Niro misses the cut despite being tipped to receive a Best Actor (Drama) nom.
Elsewhere, there were four nominations apiece for the psychological thriller Joker and the factual drama The Two Popes, with both contesting Best Motion Picture (Drama) alongside the First World War thriller 1917.
Early Oscar favourite Joaquin Phoenix earns a Best Actor (Drama) nom for his lauded performance as a mentally-troubled comedian in Joker, with British stars Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) among the other contenders.
Meanwhile, Judy Garland is looking to justify her chances of winning a second Oscar after landing a Best Actress (Drama) nod for her portrayal of Hollywood star Judy Garland in the biopic drama Judy. Her competition in that line-up includes Irish starlet Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) and previous category winner Charlize Theron (Bombshell).
On the funny side of things, the period epic Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood scored big with five nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) as well as double nods for maverick filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.
The film, which follows a fading actor and his stunt double during the tail-end of Hollywood’s Golden Age era, also secured acting mentions for stars Leonardo DiCaprio in Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) and Brad Pitt in Best Supporting Actor.
The rest of the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) category is filled by the blaxploitation biopic Dolemite is My Name, the war satire Jojo Rabbit, the mystery caper Knives Out and the autobiographical musical Rocketman.
From the latter film, Taron Egerton earns a Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nod for his portrayal of music legend Sir Elton John, and competes with fellow British stars Daniel Craig (Knives Out) and youngster Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit) as well as Hollywood favourite Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name).
Meanwhile, the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) field sees British performer Emma Thompson (Late Night) go up against rising stars Awkwafina (The Farewell), Ana de Armas (Knives Out) and Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart).
On top of being the recipient of next year’s Cecil B. DeMille award, Tom Hanks also receives a Best Supporting Actor nom for his portrayal of beloved television icon Fred Rogers in the factual drama A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
The other stars to receive Globe acting nods are Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Annette Bening (The Report), Cate Blanchett (Where’d You Go, Bernadette), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes), Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) and Margot Robbie (Bombshell).
After winning the Palme d’Or earlier this year, the South Korean thriller Parasite produced a strong showing by claiming three nominations, including two for filmmaker Bong Joon-ho.
Additionally, the film also competes in the Best Foreign Language film category along with China’s The Farewell, Spain’s Pain and Glory, and French duo Les Misérables and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
Elsewhere, the Pixar outing Toy Story 4 battles it out with fellow Disney animations Frozen 2 and the live-action remake of The Lion King in the Best Animated Film field, while music heavyweights Sir Elton John, Beyoncé AND Taylor Swift go head-to-head for the Best Original Song accolade.
Despite a variety of strong nominations, there were also some notable snubs.
Aside from a Best Actress nod for Saoirse Ronan, the period drama Little Women missed out on further recognition for British starlet Florence Pugh and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, while Emilia Clarke (Last Christmas), Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Lupita Nyong’o (Us), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems) and Constance Wu (Hustlers) were also ignored.
The 77th Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on 5 January 2020 with controversial British comedian Ricky Gervais hosting the ceremony for the fifth and ‘final’ time.
