2020 Golden Globe (TV) nominations: The Crown, Chernobyl and Unbelievable lead the pack

Following another spectacular year for television, the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) have announced their nominees for the 77th Golden Globe Awards.

Three different series received a quartet of nominations each, with Netflix’s The Crown performing well on the TV Drama side of things.

The third season of the historical drama is shortlisted for Best Television Series (Drama) along with HBO’s Big Little Lies and Succession, Apple TV’s The Morning Show and BBC’s Killing Eve.

For her portrayal of Queen Elisabeth II, Olivia Colman is in contention for Best Actress (Drama) in a strong category that features BAFTA and Emmy winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) and The Morning Show duo Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

Colman’s co-stars Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter are also acknowledged in Best Actor (Drama) and Best Supporting Actress for their respective turns as Prince Phillip and Princess Margaret.

Menzies contests his category alongside the likes of Brian Cox (Succession), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) and recent Emmy winner Billy Porter (Pose) with the fifth slot given to Kit Harington for his swansong appearance in the maligned final series of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Elsewhere, HBO’s Chernobyl performed well in the miniseries fields, with four nominations to follow up its recent dominance at the Emmys back in September.

The factual drama, which explores the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, eased its way to a Best Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television nod while also securing three acting mentions for its ensemble

Jared Harris earns a Best Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie) nom for his portrayal of Valery Legasov while co-stars Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson are nominated in the supporting categories.

However, Netflix’s Unbelievable also impressed Globe voters with a quartet of nominations, including Best Limited Series/TV Movie and a further three nods for its female cast.

Kaitlyn Dever and Merritt Wever are both shortlisted in the Best Actress (Limited Series/TV Movie) category, while co-star Toni Collette is up for Best Supporting Actress alongside recent Emmy winner Patricia Arquette (The Act) and the great Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies).

Chernobyl and Unbelievable are joined in the Best Limited Series/TV Movie line-up by Hulu’s Catch-22, FX’s Fosse/Verdon and Showtime’s The Loudest Voice.

Meanwhile, Michelle Williams will be looking to follow up her Emmy victory from September after clinching a Best Actress (Limited Series/TV Movie) nod for her portrayal of Broadway star Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon.

Co-star Sam Rockwell finds himself placed in a competitive Best Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie) field that also includes Sacha Baron Cohen (The Spy) and Russell Crowe (The Loudest Voice).

On the comedy front, BBC’s Fleabag, HBO’s Barry and Netflix’s The Kominsky Method all garnered three nominations each.

The trio all feature on the Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical) shortlist alongside Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Netflix’s The Politician.

After her own Emmy-winning success in September, British star Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) looks to be a strong favourite to clinch Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) with stern competition coming from the likes of Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Kirsten Dunst (On Becoming a God in Central Florida) and previous category winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

Fellow Fleabag star Andrew Scott finds himself placed in the Best Supporting Actor category for his popular turn as ‘Hot Priest’ alongside fellow comedy contenders Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method) and Henry Winkler (Barry).

Meanwhile, Michael Douglas is looking to make it back-to-back wins in the Best Actor (Comedy) category for his returning role in The Kominsky Method as he goes up against Ant-Man co-star Paul Rudd (Living with Yourself) and Emmy winner Bill Hader (Barry).

The rest of the Globe acting contenders include Christopher Abbott (Catch-22), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Joey King (The Act), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), Dame Helen Mirren (Catherine the Great) and Ramy Youssef (Ramy).

However, there were a notable number of snubs across the board, with the biggest being a complete shutout for the Netflix miniseries When They See Us.

Additionally, the final series of The Big Bang Theory, Orange is the New Black and Veep were completely ignored, while the big acting omissions included Mahershala Ali (True Detective), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Laura Dern (Big Little Lies), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us), Regina King (Watchmen), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Jeremy Strong (Succession), and Zendaya (Euphoria).

The 77th Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on 5 January 2020 with controversial British comedian Ricky Gervais hosting the ceremony for the fifth and ‘final’ time.
