As a tradition for awards season, the Cannes Film Festival is usually where all the fun begins as the stars travel to France to support their films especially when competing for the coveted Palme d’Or prize.

This year’s event sees several high-profile films in contention for the main award as the festival begins with the screening of Baz Luhrmann’s latest adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. The latter is also representing her other film, the Coen Bros drama Inside Llewyn Davis which co-stars Justin Timberlake and is another contender for the d’Or.

Ryan Gosling reunites with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn in the violent thriller Only God Forgives with other competition including Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra which stars Matt Damon and Michael Douglas as well as Roman Polanski’s Venus in Fur and Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.

Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring (starring Emma Watson) and James Franco’s directional debut As I Lay Dying are both placed under the Un Certain Regard category. The whole exhibition is then rounded off by the African-set crime drama Zulu starring Orlando Bloom and Forest Whittaker.
