2019 TV BAFTAs: Killing Eve dominates while Benedict Cumberbatch finally lands first acting win

It was another terrific night for the BBC as multiple programmes and performances were recognised during the 2019 BAFTA Television Awards.

Despite controversy over its eligibility for BAFTA owing to its airing date, BBC One’s Killing Eve clinched three major wins, including the coveted Drama Series accolade ahead of fellow BBC thriller Bodyguard.

Liverpudlian star (and Evertonian!) Jodie Comer deservedly secured a memorable Leading Actress victory for her acclaimed performance as offbeat yet psychopathic assassin Villanelle, with co-star Sandra Oh among her fellow nominees.

An emotional Jodie gave a powerful speech in which she praised Killing Eve writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge and fellow scouser Stephen Graham. She also paid tribute to her family as well as her late grandmother who passed away during filming of the first series.

There was also success for Irish performer Fiona Shaw, as she scooped the Supporting Actress prize for her role as MI6 boss Carolyn Martens in the spy thriller.

Elsewhere, Benedict Cumberbatch finally ended his long wait for a first BAFTA win at the seventh attempt after clinching the Leading Actor award for his lauded performance as alcoholic writer Patrick Melrose in Sky Atlantic’s Patrick Melrose, which also prevailed in the Miniseries category.

During his speech, Cumberbatch told the audience:

“Oh gosh, I think I’m going to fall over, I’m very used to being a bridesmaid not the bride.”

Meanwhile, Ben Whishaw scored another Supporting Actor prize for his portrayal of Norman Scott, the lover of disgraced politician Jeremy Thorpe in the BBC One miniseries A Very English Scandal, while the fact-based BBC Three drama Killed by My Debt persevered in the Single Drama category.

On the funny side of things, Sky Atlantic’s raunchy comedy Sally4ever pulled off a surprise win in the Scripted Comedy field ahead of BBC Two sitcom Mum and Channel 4 duo Derry Girls and Stath Lets Flats.

Jessica Hynes was awarded her second Female Comedy Performance gong for her role as overburdened mother Emily Yates in BBC Four’s There She Goes, while Steve Pemberton scored a long overdue first Male Comedy Performance win for playing various characters in BBC Two’s Inside No. 9.

Elsewhere, BBC One’s EastEnders secured the Soap & Continuing Drama prize ahead of previous category winner Casualty, while HBO’s Succession was the recipient of the International award.

It was also a terrific night for presenting duo Ant and Dec as their hit series Britain’s Got Talent, and I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! were the respective winners of Entertainment Programme and Reality and Constructed Factual.

However, the Geordie duo missed out on the Entertainment Performance honour, which was awarded to Lee Mack for Would I Lie to You?.

The other BAFTA-winning programmes included A League of Their Own (Comedy and Comedy Entertainment Programme), Louis Theroux’s Altered States (Factual Series), Gun No. 6 (Single Documentary), Who Do You Think You Are? (Features), Suffragettes with Lucy Worsley (Specialist Factual) and The Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance (Live Event).

Finally, the BBC One thriller Bodyguard was the recipient of Virgin TV’s Must-See Moment for the assassination of Julia Montague with victory coming ahead of key sequences from the likes of Coronation Street, Killing Eve and Peter Kay’s Car Share.
