Len Wiseman to direct The Mummy reboot

Reboots are suddenly becoming a regular thing in Hollywood at the moment after it was revealed today that the action-adventure The Mummy would be getting the treatment, Amazing Spider-Man-style….

A director has also been found for the reboot with Underworld filmmaker Len Wiseman chosen to tackle the project. He confirmed his involvement to Deadline and insisted that the mummy in this film would be based more on the character from the classic 1930s/1950s films rather than the recent trilogy.

“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.

One of the things that interested me with this mummy is, he’s still in essence a man. They haven’t turned his brain into a monster brain. He still has a personality and is very cunning and calculating. He’s a true character in any form, and in creature form, even if he is that staggering creature, it becomes more important that he’s a thinking, calculating person.”

Producer Alex Kurtzman also gave his perspective on the new-look film which will still rely on elements of action and horror but also go into new grounds via author Michael Crichton’s novels.

“A lot of recent movies have proven audiences are hungry for more than they used to be. You can still have a family movie, an action movie that’s more grounded than these used to be. Without saying too much, we’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from Michael Crichton’s books, and how he grounded fantastical tales in modern-day science.”

Originally I thought it was ridiculous to restart the Mummy adventures again so soon after the 1999-2008 trilogy although basing it more on the character from the 30s/50s films might make it more interesting and darker especially with Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts being involved.

The film is expected to be released in Summer 2014.
