James Franco travels to Oz in new trailer for Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful

Over 70 years after The Wizard of Oz was released, audiences will get the chance to return to the merry old land in 2013 after the full-length trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful was unveiled last night.

The new trailer follows on from the teaser which was shown back in July. The film is Disney’s fantasy prequel to the beloved classic which focuses on how magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is transported from Kansas to Oz via a twister. When he gets there, he discovers the weird and wonde of the place before encountering three witches: Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams).

More details of what Diggs must do are shown in the new trailer as the witches are unconvinced by his talent which makes him realise he must fight to become both a better wizard and a better man.

Fans of the original will be pleased to see some nice throwbacks to the musical which include the black and white Kansas sequences, the return of the munchkins and flying monkeys and a glimpse of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spiderman trilogy) directs the film which once again looks visually stunning but also shares similarities with Tim Burton’s poorly reviewed film adaptation Alice in Wonderland (2010). Here’s hoping the results aren’t the same.

Oz: The Great and Powerful will be released on March 8th 2013.
