Gravity amongst ten films on Visual Effects Oscar shortlist, Man of Steel snubbed

The shortlist for the Visual Effects category of 2013/14’s Oscars has been announced with a couple of films surprisingly overlooked.

As expected, Alfonso Cuaron’s thrilling space masterpiece Gravity has been mentioned alongside other sci-fi films like Elysium, Oblivion and Star Trek into Darkness.

There are also places on the list for blockbuster sequels like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (yet to be seen), Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World while The Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim and World War Z are there too.

To recap, the list of ten are:

Elysium
Gravity
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Iron Man 3
The Lone Ranger
Pacific Rim
Oblivion
Star Trek into Darkness
Thor: The Dark World
World War Z

Surprisingly though, there was no sign of superhero blockbuster Man of Steel which was ignored despite its huge success at the box-office. However it did receive some criticism for being too over-the-top in certain scenes including the final showdown between Superman and General Zod.

Other notable omissions included The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Rush, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Wolverine.

10-minute clips will be screened to Visual Effects Branch members on January 9th, 2014 with the final five to be selected when the Oscar nominations are announced on January 16th.
