Daisy Ridley portrays Hamlet’s lover Ophelia in official trailer for Ophelia

For many film fans, Daisy Ridley has gained a strong following through her lead role as Rey in the new Star Wars sequels The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017).

With the Skywalker saga due to end later this year, the British actress has been working on a completely different project that centres on a far more tragic figure in Hamlet heroine Ophelia.

The young noblewoman is the focus of the upcoming drama Ophelia which has finally unveiled an official trailer.

Directed by Claire McCarthy (The Waiting City, The Luminaries), the film follows the story of Hamlet from the perspective of Ophelia. As lady-in-waiting for Queen Gertrude, her singular spirit captures the affections of the Prince of Denmark. But as lust and betrayal threaten the kingdom, Ophelia finds herself trapped between true love and controlling her own destiny.

Daisy’s main co-stars include Naomi Watts (The Impossible, Birdman) as Queen Gertrude, Clive Owen (King Arthur, The Knick) as Claudius, Tom Felton (Harry Potter series, The Flash) as Laertes and George MacKay (Pride, Captain Fantastic) as Hamlet.

The rest of the cast includes Devon Terrell (Barry, The Professor), Daisy Head (Underworld: Blood Wars, Girlfriends) and Dominic Mafham (The Clinic, Kingdom).

Despite the footage (and a new poster), a UK release for Ophelia has not yet been announced.
