Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep battle for women’s equal rights in official trailer for Suffragette

It’s been almost 100 years since British women were granted the right to vote and be treated equally amongst their male counterparts in the work place.

However the incredible story of that power struggle for female equality is finally coming to the big-screen in the form of the upcoming film Suffragette.

The biopic drama, which boasts a talented cast and magnificent-looking production designs, has unveiled its official trailer online.

Directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and adapted by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady), the film focuses on the female workers in early 20th Century Britain who decide to tackle the system during the early feminist movement. However their peaceful protests soon turn to violence which leave some of the women having to risk their lives in order to gain equal rights.

Oscar-nominee Carey Mulligan (An Education, Far From the Madding Crowd) plays the main activist Maud and is strongly supported by two heavyweight actresses in Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech, Les Miserables) as fellow suffragette Edith New and three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep (Sophie’s Choice, The Iron Lady) as Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the Suffragette Movement.

The rest of the strong ensemble includes Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Paddington), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, The Guard), Romola Garai (Atonement, The Hour) and Anne-Marie Duff (Shameless, Nowhere Boy) while Natalie Press (My Summer of Love) also features as the tragic Emily Davison.

It has just been announced that the drama will be opening this year’s BFI London Film Festival which is a good sign for the film’s potential award chances.

An official UK release date has been confirmed for October 30th.
