Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard tackle one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays in Macbeth trailer

The plays of the legendary playwright William Shakespeare have had some mixed times on the big-screen barring some exceptions like Henry V (1989), Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Titus (1999).

But the dark and twisted story of Macbeth has never quite made the proper transition to film audiences though that is changing later this year. Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy has now been adapted for the big-screen with two exceptional stars tackling the lead roles in Michael Fassbender (Shame, 12 Years a Slave) and Oscar winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, The Dark Knight Rises).

The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month, premiered its official trailer earlier today.

Directed by newcomer Justin Kurzel (The Snowtown Murders, The Turning) and set in medieval times, the story sees Fassbender play Macbeth, a renowned duke who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches telling him that he will become King of Scotland if he kills the current ruler Duncan. Manipulated even further by his wife Lady Macbeth (Cotillard), the duke’s merciless act threatens to lead to his eventual downfall.

The film’s support cast includes David Thewlis (Naked, The Theory of Everything) as King Duncan, Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes, Cinderella Man) as Banquo and Sean Harris (The Borgias, Prometheus) and Elizabeth Debicki (A Few Best Men, The Great Gatsby) as Macduff and Lady Macduff.

Macbeth will be released in the UK on October 2nd.
