Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby to open 2013 Cannes Film Festival

Nine months since its original 2012 release date, the latest big-screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is finally set to be unveiled to audiences at one of the biggest events in the film industry.

The Los Angeles Times has confirmed that the lavishing period drama which is directed by Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, Australia) will be the first film to be shown at the prestige Cannes Film Festival which begins on May 15th. Luhrmann gave a statement about the screening:

“It is a great honour for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival. We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts – not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael.”

Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, The Departed), Tobey Maguire (Spiderman, Seabiscuit) and Carey Mulligan (An Education, Shame) star in the colourful-looking romantic drama which is due for release in the UK on May 17th.
The Cannes Film Festival will be judged this year by directing legend Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T: The Extra Terrestrial, Schindler’s List) with several films looking to compete for the main prize of the Palme D’Or.
