Almost seventeen years since we saw Mark ‘Rent-Boy’ Renton walking away with a massive bag of cash in the final scene of the British masterpiece Trainspotting (1996), there has always been talk of whether its sequel Porno would ever get made for the big-screen.
Well, the day has finally come after Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Shallow Grave, Slumdog Millionaire) told The Playlist that he and screenwriter John Hodge will adapt the follow-up to Irvine Welsh’s novel, with work beginning on the project in 2016.
This has been a long time coming. There’s always been this long-term plan for Trainspotting 2, if John can produce a decent enough script, I don’t think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back. I think they’ll wanna know that the parts are good so they don’t feel like they are letting anyone down.”
Porno sees the main characters from Trainspotting crossing paths again ten years after their previous association, as the story switches from their drug-taking days to making it big in the porn industry.
Johnny Lee Miller (Sick Boy), Robert Carlyle (Begbie) and Ewen Bremner (Spud) are all likely to return for the sequel, though it is not known whether Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role as Renton.
Having also starred in Boyle’s Shallow Grave (1994) and A Life Less Ordinary (1997), the Scottish actor fell out with his director when he was overlooked for the lead role in The Beach (2000) which instead went to Leonardo DiCaprio.
