BAFTA (TV) winners: Chernobyl clinches record-breaking haul while Glenda Jackson lands Best Actress

After key successes at the Emmys and Golden Globes, Chernobyl has continued its phenomenal awards dominance with a record-breaking haul at the TV BAFTAs.

Having already scooped a magnificent seven wins at the organisation’s crafts awards, the factual mini-series has landed another two key prizes at this year’s virtual BAFTA ceremony.

Telling the story of the nuclear disaster at the Ukraine plant on 26 April 1986, the five-part Sky original series took home the gongs for Best Mini-Series and Best Leading Actor for Jared Harris as real-life scientist Valery Legasov.

As a result, Chernobyl is officially the most decorated BAFTA-winning programme of all time having surpassed the previous record held in a single year by the Channel 4 mini-series Sex Traffic (2004).

As predicted by many, 84-year-old veteran Glenda Jackson became the oldest recipient of the Leading Actress prize as she won for her powerful role as Maud, an elderly woman suffering with dementia in the mystery drama Elizabeth is Missing.

Elsewhere, the dark comedy The End of the F***ing World surprisingly won Best Drama Series ahead of The Crown and Giri/Haji while Naomi Ackie clinched Best Supporting Actress for her role as Series 2 antagonist Bonnie.

The Best Supporting Actor accolade was presented to Will Sharpe for his performance as homosexual rent boy Rodney Yamaguchi in the crime-thriller Giri/Haji.

Another notable upset came in the Comedy categories as the Channel 4 sitcom Stath Lets Flats overcame tough competition from Fleabag and Derry Girls to win the awards for Best Scripted Comedy and Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme for leading star Jamie Demetriou.

The other big shock saw a tearful Sian Clifford overcome her on-screen sister and Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge to win Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme.

This year’s “must-see moment” award, the only prize voted for by the public, went to Gavin And Stacey for the scene in which Nessa (Ruth Wilson) proposed to Smithy (James Corden) during last year’s Christmas special comeback. The moment beat off strong competition from the likes of Game of Thrones, Coronation Street and Line of Duty.

Other notable winners on the night included The Left Behind (Best Single Drama), Emmerdale (Best Soap & Continuing Drama), When They See Us (Best International Programme), Strictly Come Dancing (Best Entertainment Programme), Finding Neverland (Best Factual Series) and Blue Planet Live (Best Live Event).

Amongst the big shows to go home empty-handed included The Virtues, Gentleman Jack, A Confession and Derry Girls.

Broadcast as live on BBC One from a closed-doors studio with just host Richard Ayoade and some award presenters there in person, the nominees relied on their Wi-Fi connections to accept their prizes – and all seemed to go smoothly.

With the winners accepting their prizes virtually, many nominees got glammed up at home despite the lack of a red carpet – and shared their pictures on social media as they enjoyed the ceremony.
