Awards season is finally in full flow as the Screen Actors Guild Awards unveiled their nominations for film and television.
On the film front, the factual drama Trumbo leads the pack with three mentions, including the prestigious Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture field, where it competes against fellow true-life flicks The Big Short and Spotlight, as well as surprise nominees Beasts of No Nation and Straight Outta Compton.
The film, which focuses on Dalton Trumbo’s struggles in Hollywood after being blacklisted, also scored acting nods for Bryan Cranston in Leading Male Actor and Dame Helen Mirren in Supporting Female Actor.
For his portrayal of Trumbo, Cranston is shortlisted alongside Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and last year’s category winner Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl).
In the case of Mirren, the British veteran finds herself in contention for two acting gongs, including her supporting turn as Hollywood journalist Hedda Hopper. Additionally, she also receives a shock Leading Female Actor nod for her portrayal of Jewish refugee Maria Altmann in the factual drama Woman in Gold.
Her competition in that particular category include Oscar favourites Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) as well as another surprise contender in Sarah Silverman for the indie drama I Smile Back.
Elsewhere, British trio Christian Bale (The Big Short), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) go head-to-head in the Supporting Male Actor line-up alongside Michael Shannon (99 Homes) and youngster Jacob Tremblay (Room).
However, the category did see snubs for Spotlight duo Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, as well as Sylvester Stallone for Creed.
Meanwhile, Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) joins fellow British star Dame Helen Mirren in the Supporting Female Actor field along with Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Rooney Mara (Carol) and Alicia Vikander (Steve Jobs).
Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble category sees the post-apocalyptic blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road compete against the likes of Furious 7, Jurassic World and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
The 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 30 January 2016.

Meanwhile, there were no such surprises in the television categories, as a variety of renowned programmes made the cut once again.
In the drama fields, ITV’s Downton Abbey and the final series of AMC’s Mad Men are in contention for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series accolade, along with HBO’s Game of Thrones, Showtime’s Homeland and Netflix’s House of Cards.
After winning the lead acting gongs last year, Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) are looking to repeat in their respective categories.
Davis is up against the likes of Claire Danes (Homeland), Dame Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) and Robin Wright (House of Cards) in Female Actor (Drama) while Spacey competes in a tough Male Actor (Drama) line-up alongside Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).
In the comedy categories, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black is looking to defend its Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series crown after prevailing a year earlier.
However, the prison-based dramedy faces stern competition from the likes of ABC’s Modern Family, Prime Video’s Transparent and HBO’s Veep in a six field line-up.
As with the drama victors, last season’s comedy acting winners Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) and William H. Macy (Shameless) are targetting repeat success in their respective categories alongside high-profile contenders like Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent).
Having garnered film nominations for their supporting roles in Beasts of No Nation and Bridge of Spies, British stars Idris Elba and Mark Rylance also lock horns in the Male Actor (Television Movie or Miniseries) field for their respective performances in Luther and Wolf Hall.
Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman receives a surprise Female Actor (TV Movie/Miniseries) nomination for her portrayal of Hollywood star Grace Kelly in the poorly-reviewed television film Grace of Monaco. Her competition in that category includes Queen Latifah (Bessie) and Susan Sarandon (The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe).
Finally, HBO’s Game of Thrones is seeking to win the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize for a FIFTH successive year, with Marvel’s Daredevil and The Walking Dead among the other programmes standing in its way.
