Following yesterday’s Screen Actor’s Guild Award nominations, the Golden Globes have offered up their list of contenders for film and television.
On the small-screen front, FX’s Fargo leads the way with a weighty five nods, including the coveted Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television gong.
The television spin-off of the acclaimed 1996 film also received four mentions for its cast members. Leading men Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman go head-to-head in the Best Actor (Mini-Series/TV Movie) category, while co-stars Alison Tolman and Colin Hanks are both in contention for Best Actress (Mini-Series/TV Movie) and Best Supporting Actor respectively.
However, the black comedy-drama faces stern competition from HBO’s acclaimed crime thriller True Detective, which scored an impressive four noms including a place on the Mini-Series/TV Movie line-up.
Additionally, main stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson join Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman on the Best Actor (Mini-Series/TV Movie) shortlist, while Michelle Monaghan is up for Best Supporting Actress.
Fellow HBO duo The Normal Heart and Olive Kitteridge are also in contention for the Mini-Series/TV Movie prize, with both programmes landing acting nods for the likes of Frances McDormand, Bill Murray and Mark Ruffalo.
After impressing with UK audiences earlier this year, the BBC crime drama The Missing nabbed two key mentions, including a Best Actress nomination for Frances O’Connor.
Elsewhere, the drama fields produced a mixed bag of results for various programmes, with some underperforming and others being shut out completely.
In the Best Television Series (Drama) line-up, Showtime’s The Affair competes alongside ITV’s Downton Abbey, CBS’s The Good Wife and Netflix’s House of Cards with all four shows nominated for three Globes each.
HBO’s Game of Thrones rounds off the Television Series (Drama) shortlist, though the hit fantasy series surprisingly failed to land a nom elsewhere, with lauded star Peter Dinklage ignored for his lauded role as Tyrion Lannister.
Elsewhere, British star Ruth Wilson (The Affair) and Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) receive their first nominations in the Best Actress (Drama) field, with their competition consisting of previous category winners Claire Danes (Homeland), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and last year’s victor Robin Wright (House of Cards).
In the Best Actor (Drama) line-up, Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) will look to end his long wait for a Golden Globe triumph, with British duo Clive Owen (The Knick) and Dominic West (The Affair) among those standing in his way.
Finally, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black is the standout nominee from this year’s comedy slate with three mentions, including Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical) and acting nods for actresses Taylor Schilling and Uzo Aduba.
The prison-based dramedy faces stern competition in the main category from CW’s Jane the Virgin, Prime Video’s Transparent, and HBO pair Girls and Silicon Valley.
Having dominated the Emmys in recent years, Julia Louis-Dreyfus will hope to land another Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) gong for Veep, with Lena Dunham (Girls) and new contender Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) among her rival competitors.
Meanwhile, British comedian actor Ricky Gervais receives a comeback nod in Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for his role in Derek and is competing against the likes of Louis C. K. (Louie), Don Cheadle (House of Lies) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent).
The rest of the notable acting nominees include Kathy Bates (American Horror Story: Freak Show), Matt Bomer (The Normal Heart), Alan Cumming (The Good Wife), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Honourable Woman), Allison Janney (Mom), Jessica Lange (American Horror Story: Freak Show), William H. Macy (Shameless), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), James Spader (The Blacklist), and last year’s Supporting Actor winner Jon Voight (Ray Donovan).
In terms of major snubs, the likes of The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Hannibal, Mad Men, Modern Family and the final series of Boardwalk Empire were completely shut out while the big acting omissions included Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Richard Jenkins (Olive Kitteridge), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Julia Roberts (The Normal Heart), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Kerry Washington (Scandal).
The 72nd Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on 11 January 2015 with comedian actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler back as co-hosts for a third consecutive year.
