Following the conclusion of the brutal FX series Sons of Anarchy a couple of years ago, Charlie Hunnam is looking to bolster his film career after recent appearances in Pacific Rim (2013) and Crimson Peak (2015).
The Irish actor is now tackling the pivotal role of the legendary King Arthur in a new action adventure which is being helmed by renowned British director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Sherlock Holmes).
Entitled King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, the film’s official trailer has premiered at Comic Con and offers a gritty and fast-paced take on the classic story.
The plot sees a young Arthur left distraught when his royal father is murdered which leads to his sinister uncle Vortigen being King. Robbed of his birthright, Arthur faces survival in the back alleys of the city and years later, he manages to prove his worthiness to the crown when he pulls the sword from the stone. He is then forced to acknowledge his true legacy which leads to another threat coming from his uncle.
Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Hugo) plays the villainous Vortigen with the rest of the talented ensemble including Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders, Grimsby), Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator, Guardians of the Galaxy), Katie McGrath (Merlin, Jurassic World), Tom Wu (Da Vinci’s Demons, Marco Polo), Astrid Bergès-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) and Eric Bana (Hulk, Star Trek).
Game of Thrones actors Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton) and Aidan Gillan (Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish) also feature in the film, the latter of whom reunites with Hunnam after their previous work on Queer as Folk (1999-2000).
There are also rumours that footballing legend David Beckham will be making a cameo in the historical epic though it certainly won’t involve him kicking a ball!
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will be released in the UK on 24th March 2017.
