2015 Emmy Award nominations: Game of Thrones ahead of the pack with 24 nods

The nominations for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.

Once again, HBO’s Game of Thrones reigns supreme with a healthy 24 nominations that included the coveted Outstanding Drama Series category. Additionally, stars Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey are all shortlisted in the supporting acting brackets for their respective roles as Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister.

However, the epic fantasy series faces stern competition for the top prize from the likes of the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul, and the final series of AMC’s Mad Men.

In the case of Mad Men, stars Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, and Christina Hendricks will all be looking to finally get their due at the Emmys after a number of defeats in previous years. Hamm faces stern competition from the likes of Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) in Lead Actor, while Moss squares off against Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Taraji P. Henson (Empire) and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) in a very tight Lead Actress category.

The rest of the notable acting nominees include Claire Danes (Homeland), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black), and Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul).

On the comedy front, ABC’s Modern Family is looking to pull off a record-breaking SIXTH consecutive win in the Outstanding Comedy Series where it competes against the likes of Amazon’s Transparent, HBO’s Veep and the final series of NBC’s Parks and Recreation.

Emmy favourite Julia Louis-Dreyfus is also seeking to make history by winning Lead Actress for a fourth straight year for her lauded role as newly-appointed US President Selina Meyer in the HBO comedy Veep. However, she faces stern opposition from the likes of Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), and Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer).

With four-time winner Jim Parsons overlooked this year, the Lead Actor category sees newcomers Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) and early frontrunner Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) square off against previous nominees like Louis C.K. (Louie) and William H. Macy (Shameless).

Elsewhere, last year’s Supporting Actress/Actor victors Allison Janney (Mom) and Ty Burrell (Modern Family) are seeking repeat wins against the likes of Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Tony Hale (Veep), Keegan Michael-Key (Key & Peele) and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt duo Jane Krakowski and Tituss Burgess.

BBC’s historical drama Wolf Hall also scored well with some key mentions including acting nods for Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis, while Ricky Gervais is surprisingly nominated in Lead Actor for his swansong turn as disabled care home assistant Derek Noakes in the dark comedy Derek: The Special.
