The story of the Jets and Sharks is brought back to life in official trailer for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story

Sixty years ago, critics and audiences were treated to the musical extravaganza that was the nine-time Oscar-winning West Side Story (1961).

Adapted as a modern day take on William Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet, the romantic tearjerker starred Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as star-crossed lovers caught between the bitter feud of their rival families; the Sharks and Jets.

Several decades on, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T: The Extra Terrestrial, Schindler’s List) is bringing his own adaption of the classic musical to life later this year.

Following the release of a teaser in late April, a full-length trailer has finally dropped……

Newcomer Rachel Zegler tackles the key role of Maria Vasquez alongside Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, Baby Driver) as Tony, David Alvarez (The Stamp Collector) as Bernardo Vasquez and Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, The Prom) as Anita.

Having won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Anita in the 1961 classic, Rita Moreno is also involved in this version as a new character named Valentina. However, there is no involvement at all for other original stars Richard Beymer or George Chakiris (who won an Oscar for his performance as Bernardo).

The rest of the cast includes Maddie Ziegler (The Book of Henry, Sia’s Music), newcomer Josh Andrés Rivera, Mike Faist (Wilding, The Atlantic City Story), Ana Isabelle (The Eyes, Imprisoned) and Corey Stoll (House of Cards, Ant-Man).

West Side Story will be released in the UK on 10 December.
