The OSCAS – Celebrating the best of Television in 2023 (Part 1)

Hello, and welcome to the first edition of the 2023 OSCAS (On-Screen Community Awards)!

Once again, it has been another exhilarating year of television that continues to provide plenty of quality across different channels (including BBC and ITV) and streaming services (including Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+).

2023 saw Idris Elba use his negotiating skills to rescue fellow hostages trapped onboard a plane in Apple TV’s gripping thriller series Hijack, while solar contractor Ronald Gladden was kept in the dark about his involvement in a fake trial in Amazon’s humorous reality hoax sitcom Jury Duty.

We were also introduced to a variety of new stories concerning the ups and downs of various individuals including an Irish crime unit, a strictly religious family, a depressed therapist, an aspiring comedian actress, and rival rap siblings.

It was also a stressful time for kitchen staff in both the second series of The Bear, and the excellent television spin-off of Boiling Point.

Once again, a number of real-life figures were given the small-screen treatment, from the good (Noele Gordon, Cary Grant) to the terrible (Jimmy Savile, Raoul Moat, The Yorkshire Ripper).

Elsewhere, the Star Wars franchise continued to expand with both Ahsoka, and a third lot of The Mandalorian, while Frasier Crane and Raylan Givens made mixed returns to television after many years away.

On the subject of disappointment, we said a sad goodbye to a memorable group of characters including Sgt. Catherine Cawood, Coach Ted Lasso, Midge Maisel, Dushane Hill, Sterling Archer, Otis Millburn, the ghosts of Button House and more reluctantly, the Tongs and LA Lakers.

And of course, let’s not forget the bittersweet farewells of both the Roy dynasty and the Royal Family in the concluding chapters of Succession, and The Crown.

We also continued to follow the lives of some ongoing favourites including Charlie and Nick, Vinnie O’Neill, Wrexham FC, the Frasers, and the staff of Abbott Elementary.

With all said and done, it is now my pleasure to reveal the first group of winners for the 2023 On-Screen Community TV Awards…
