The OSCAS – Celebrating the best of Television in 2022 (Part 1)

Hello, and welcome to the first edition of the 2022 OSCAS (On-Screen Community Awards)!

As an avid telly addict, it goes without saying that this has been my most productive year in terms of binge-watching various programmes across 2022. From BBC and ITV to streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ or Apple TV, the quality of television has been remarkable and (for the most part) mesmerising!

It was a year that saw Martin Freeman don a terrific scouse accent in the Liverpool-based crime series The Responder, while the emotional strain of working in a maternity ward was brilliantly captured in the marvellous mini-series This is Going to Hurt. There were other new stories that fascinated us too including the adventures (and misadventures) of a Philadelphia elementary school, an autistic Korean lawyer, two lovestruck teenage boys, a strained Chicago kitchen, a squadron of SAS soldiers and a pack of devoted Irish sisters seeking to take down a certain prick.

Additionally, a number of real-life figures were given faithful adaptations on the small-screen from the good (Anne Williams, Julia Child, the LA Lakers) to the bad (Michael Peterson, John Darwin) and to the downright despicable (Stephen Port, Jeffrey Dahmer).

Meanwhile, Marvel and Star Wars provided plenty of eye-catching entertainment with hit shows like Ms. Marvel, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor while the Game of Thrones franchise retained some credibility via the prequel series House of the Dragon. Sadly, Amazon’s expensive adaptation of the Lord of the Rings proved to be a sad case of style over substance for this die-hard Rings fan….

On the subject of disappointment, we said a bittersweet goodbye to a range of fascinating characters including Tony Johnson, Sam Fox, Anne Lister, Dolores Abernathy, Earnest Marks, and of course, Jimmy McGill, Kim Wexler and the Breaking Bad universe in general. The less said about a certain Russian assassin’s demise, the better….

Additionally, we also bid adieu to the beloved Byrde, Pearson and Shelby clans while popular collaborations like Grace and Frankie, Jen and Judy and the Derry Girls also departed our screens. Told you it was a tough year!

However, we also continued to follow the lives of some ongoing favourites throughout 2022 including Rue Bennett, Miriam Maisel, Deborah Vance, Sterling Archer, Vinnie O’Neill, June Osborne, the Frasers, and the (new-look) Royal Family.

With all said and done, it is now my pleasure to reveal the first group of winners for the 2022 On-Screen Community TV Awards…
