Golden Globe (film) nominations: The Banshees of Inisherin takes pole position with eight nods

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association have spoken folks….

This afternoon saw the controversial organisation unveil their list of nominations for film and television with The Banshees of Inisherin dominating the big-screen contenders with a hefty eight mentions.

The Irish dramedy, which focuses on the abrupt fall-out between two old friends, is shortlisted for Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) while filmmaker Martin McDonagh is in contention twice for his directing and writing.

Additionally, leading man Colin Farrell is up for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) while co-stars Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon are all nominated for their supporting turns.

Meanwhile, the multiverse-based dramedy Everything Everywhere All at Once performed well with six nods including the coveted Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) award as well as acting mentions for Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and comeback king Ke Huy Quan.

Both Banshees and Everything compete in a versatile main category alongside the period epic Babylon, the dark comedy Triangle of Sadness and the mystery caper sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

On the drama front, Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans is in contention for five Globes including the coveted Best Motion Picture (Drama) in which it competes against blockbuster sequels Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick plus the music-based biopic Elvis and the drama TÁR.

Once again, Spielberg is up for Best Director while leading actress Michelle Williams is shortlisted for Best Actress (Drama) alongside early Oscar frontrunner Cate Blanchett (TÁR), Olivia Colman (Empire of Light), Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Ana de Armas (Blonde) as tragic Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.

Elsewhere, rising star Austin Butler is nominated for his portrayal of legendary singer Elvis Presley in Elvis and faces stern competition from the likes of Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Hugh Jackman (The Son) and Bill Nighy (Living).

Other recognisable actors to land nods include Daniel Craig (Glass Onion), Margot Robbie (Babylon), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Menu), Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), Ralph Fiennes (The Menu), Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Carey Mulligan (She Said), Brad Pitt (Babylon) and Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse).

The Best Animated Film line-up sees Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Pinocchio face-off against the likes of Pixar’s Turning Red and the Puss in Boots sequel The Last Wish while the Indian action epic RRR is up for Best Motion Picture (Non-English film) and Best Original Song (“Naatu Naatu”).

As to be expected, there were a lot of notable omissions with Women Talking only managing two nominations while the key acting snubs included Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick), Tom Hanks (A Man Called Otto), Jessie Buckley (Women Talking), Claire Foy (Women Talking), Paul Dano (The Fabelmans) and Ben Whishaw (Women Talking).

The 80th Golden Globe Awards will take place on Wednesday 11th January (1:00am GMT) with hosting duties being taken by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
