Shia LaBeouf gets entangled in Romanian underworld in red-band trailer for Charlie Countryman

Having concluded his high-profile role in the Transformers series, Shia LaBeouf is now starting to find his way into some gritty projects which include Lars Von Trier’s erotic drama Nymphomaniac.

Another of those upcoming releases is the violent crime thriller Charlie Countryman, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Bearing some similarities to recent art-house thrillers like Drive (2011) and this year’s Only God Forgives, the film’s brutal red-band trailer has been unveiled online.

Directed by newcomer Fredrick Bond, the plot sees LaBeouf play a young man who has a vision of his late mother which leads to him traveling to Budapest. Whilst there, he gets embroiled with drugs in the Romanian criminal underworld but also falls in love with a young woman whose husband is a jealous and violent gangster.

Evan Rachel Wood (Across the Universe, The Wrestler), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Hannibal), Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black) and Oscar-winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners) are amongst the big names in the starry support cast.

There are also surprise roles for young British actors Rupert Grint (Harry Potter series) and James Buckley (The Inbetweeners, Rock and Chips) as two friends of the titular character.

The film is due for release in the UK in a couple of weeks.
