For over forty years, Robert Redford has earned his place as one of the big names from the New Hollywood era particularity with his roles in classics films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973) and All the President’s Men (1976).
After then winning an Oscar for his directing work on Ordinary People (1980), the veteran has been mostly making films with the odd few acting roles thrown in.
However at the age of 77, it looks like he is on the comeback trail not only with his recent casting in the much-anticipated Marvel superhero sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier but also his buzzed role in the upcoming survival drama All is Lost, which premiered its official trailer last night.
Directed by J.C. Chandor (Margin Call), the film sees Redford play a man who sails across the Indian Ocean in his yacht only for it to crash into a shipping container. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man must battle his way through a violent storm as well as overcome the shark-infested waters.
The indie-drama was a critical hit at the Cannes Film Festival with Redford being touted for Best Actor at next year’s Oscars. Given that other sea-based films like Titanic (1997) and Life of Pi (2012) succeeded with awards glory in the past, I’m sure this particular effort will warrant attention too especially with Redford earning rave reviews.
All is Lost sails into cinemas on November 29th.
