Main reactions to JJ Abram’s official confirmation as director of Star Wars: Episode 7

Following Friday’s big reveal that JJ Abrams would be directing Star Wars: Episode 7, there were many people wanting to know whether the news was actually official, but low and behold a statement from LucasFilm has now confirmed the story in what has to be the most audacious directing coup in recent film history. A new chapter is about to begin….

Here are the reactions of the studio behind it all as well as the three biggest names that made this event possible….

LucasFilm:

“After a bevy of emails and phone calls, the formalities have been wrapped up, and at long last everyone can exhale and properly share the word with an excited Internet. Yes, JJ Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.”

JJ Abrams:

“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honour. I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”

George Lucas:

I have been consistently impressed with Abrams as a filmmaker and storyteller. The legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

Kathleen Kennedy:

“It’s very exciting to have JJ aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie. JJ is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

While all this has been going on, Paramount vice-chairman Rob Moore has announced that Abrams will remain involved with the Star Trek franchise despite his move to the ‘dark side’ (the probable reaction of most Trekkie fans!).

“JJ will continue to develop projects for us including a new Mission: Impossible, and he is committed to produce another Star Trek.”

I don’t think anyone can utter the fateful line “I have a bad feeling about this” when you know just how committed and hard-working Abrams will be once he tackles the project. You can definitely be sure that exciting times lie ahead for the Star Wars franchise!
