Following the release of yesterday’s Critic Choice Award nominations, the Screen Actor’s Guild are the next major awards group to offer up their list of contenders across film and television.
Starting with the big-screen, the musical epic Les Misérables, the historical biopic Lincoln and the romantic dramedy Silver Linings Playbook share the lead with four nods apiece, including the prestigious Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize.
All three films are joined in that key category by the fact-based thriller Argo and, more surprisingly, the British comedy-drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Adapted from the hit West End musical, and based on the Victor Hugo novel, Les Misérables also garnered acting mentions for Hugh Jackman in Leading Male Actor and Anne Hathaway in Supporting Female Actor, as well as being shortlisted for Outstanding Stunt Ensemble.
Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln bagged a hat-trick of acting nods for its cast, with Daniel Day-Lewis strongly tipped to win Leading Male Actor for his portrayal of American president Abraham Lincoln, while co-stars Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones are both in contention for the supporting gongs.
Meanwhile, Silver Linings Playbook also secured a trio of acting noms for its talented stars, with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence contesting the lead fields while Robert De Niro is recognised in the Supporting Male Actor category.
Despite seeing her film overlooked for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast honour, critics darling Jessica Chastain earns a Leading Female Actor nod for her performance in the factual war thriller Zero Dark Thirty.
The female-led category is rounded off by Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone), Dame Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) and Naomi Watts (The Impossible).
Elsewhere, John Hawkes (The Sessions) and Denzel Washington (Flight) complete a stellar Leading Male Actor line-up while Oscar-winning stars Alan Arkin (Argo), Javier Bardem (Skyfall), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), Helen Hunt (The Sessions), Nicole Kidman (The Paperboy), Dame Maggie Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) are among those nominated in the supporting fields.
Finally, the rest of the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble contenders include the James Bond blockbuster Skyfall, and comic-book blockbusters The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke will receive the SAG Life Achievement Award for his contributions to film and television over the past fifty years.
The 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles on 27 January 2013.

In the drama fields, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire will be targetting a third consecutive victory in the Outstanding Performance by a Drama Ensemble category alongside other big-name shows like Downton Abbey, Homeland and AMC duo Breaking Bad and Mad Men.
Central star Steve Buscemi is also seeking a hat-trick of Male Actor (Drama) successes for his role as Atlantic City gangster Nucky Thompson despite mighty competition from Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and first time nominees Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) and Damian Lewis (Homeland).
Meanwhile, the Female Actor (Drama) line-up sees Claire Danes acknowledged for her lauded performance in Homeland, with her rival nominees including Downton Abbey duo Michelle Dockery and Dame Maggie Smith.
Over in comedy, ABC’s Modern Family is looking to secure a third straight victory in the prestigious Outstanding Performance by a Comedy Ensemble field after back-to-back successes in 2010 and 2011. Among the other shows standing in its way include The Big Bang Theory, The Office and 30 Rock.
Additionally, the family-based sitcom receives double Male Actor (Comedy) nominations for male stars Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet, while Sofía Vergara is shortlisted in a Female Actor (Comedy) line-up that includes newly-appointed Golden Globe hosts Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation).
Elsewhere, the political television film Game Change scored a trio of acting noms for stars Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Ed Harris, who are acknowledged for their respective portrayals of Sarah Palin, Steve Schmidt and John McCain.
Moore is heavily favoured to win her category after clinching an Emmy for her performance as Palin back in September.
