Jessica Chastain portrays televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye trailer

Back in 2011, Jessica Chastain enjoyed a dream breakthrough year with key roles in four films including her Oscar-nominated performance as Celia Foote in the race-based drama The Help.

Since then, the red-headed actress has become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars with noteworthy appearances in the likes of Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Interstellar (2014), The Martian (2015), Molly’s Game (2017) and IT: Chapter Two (2019).

Her latest leading role sees her don heavy make-up to portray real-life televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in the upcoming biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Helmed by Michael Showalter (Hello, My Name is Doris, The Big Sick), the plot focuses on how Bakker rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park. However, financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal would eventually topple her empire.

Fellow Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge, Breathe) co-stars as Bakker’s husband Jim with additional support coming from Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Daredevil), Sam Jaeger (American Sniper, The Handmaid’s Tale), Fredric Lehne (Zero Dark Thirty, The Greatest Showman), Louis Cancelmi (Billions, The Irishman) and Cherry Jones (Signs, Succession).

The Eyes of Tammy Faye is due for release in the UK in September.
