Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart back for X-Men: Days of Future Past

“Did you think you were the only one of your kind?” – That quote which was spoken by Magneto in the original X-Men series is about to become ironic following some very welcoming news for the fans….

With the rebooted prequel X-Men: First Class doing well last year in terms of box-office and favourable reviews, a sequel has already been commissioned in the shape of X-Men: Days of Future Past with Marvel going down the nostalgic route by bringing back former franchise director Bryan Singer.

But he isn’t the only returnee who is back for this new film as the Usual Suspects and Superman Returns film-maker also confirmed via Twitter that original stars Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are set to make their comeback to the series by reprising their roles as Magneto and Professor Charles Xavier.

“Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 & @SirPatStew are joining the cast of #XMEN #DaysOfFuturePast #magneto #professorX More to come..”

Clearly continuity has never been a strong point for the X-Men film series as the follow-up will still feature James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as the younger versions of Professor X and Magneto respectively. However it is possible that Stewart and McKellen are only appearing as potential cameos in what is becoming a mind-boggling story arc especially for those who watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine or First Class.

The plot for Days of Future Past will be based on Chris Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men storyline which introduces Cyclops to the the X-Men universe alongside Phoenix’s alternate reality daughter Rachel Summers/Grey.

The film is being targeted for a 2014 release. In the meantime, X-Men fans can look forward to another solo outing for Logan/Wolverine in next year’s sequel The Wolverine.
