Ben Foster portrays disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong in official trailer for The Program

Most sports biopics tend to highlight the rise to fame of various sportsmen from James Braddock (Cinderella Man) and James Hunt (Rush) to Mohammed Ali (Ali) and the 1928 British athletics team (Chariots of Fire).

But the decline of one particular sports star is about to become the focus of an upcoming drama as British director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) tackles the story of the successful yet controversial cyclist Lance Armstrong.

An official trailer of the biopic, entitled The Program, was unveiled earlier today.

Ben Foster (Hostage, Lone Survivor) takes on the challenging role of Armstrong who became a much-loved figure around the world after winning the Tour De France on multiple occasions even after beating cancer. However his reputation would end up being tarnished in 2012 when Irish journalist David Walsh exposed his excessive use of banned substances before each race in his novel Seven Deadly Sins.

Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, Moone Boy) plays Walsh with the rest of the cast including Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hobbit trilogy), Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad) and two-time Oscar-winning veteran Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, All the President’s Men, Rain Man).

No official release date has yet been confirmed though the film is likely to be released towards the end of 2015.
