2023 BAFTA Television Awards: Bad Sisters and Derry Girls enjoy the craic while Kate Winslet lands Best Actress

There was an Irish flavour to last night’s BAFTA Television Award winners as Bad Sisters and the final series of Derry Girls took home major honours.

Both series claimed two gongs apiece with Bad Sisters landing Best Drama Series ahead of the likes of The Responder and Sherwood. Additionally, Anne-Marie Duff scored a first BAFTA win in Best Supporting Actress for her performance as the fragile wife of a cruel businessman.

For its swansong series, Derry Girls clinched Best Scripted Comedy ahead of new sitcoms Big Boys and Am I Being Unreasonable? while star Siobhán McSweeney won Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for her scene-stealing turn as strict nun Sister Michael.

Elsewhere, Kate Winslet added a first television award to her hat-trick of film wins by taking home Best Leading Actress for her powerful role as a mother trying to help her depressed daughter in the Channel 4 drama I Am Ruth. During her speech, she paid tribute to her co-star and real-life daughter Mia Threapleton while the production itself won Best Single Drama.

Meanwhile, Ben Whishaw overcame strong competition from the likes of Martin Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Gary Oldman to win Best Leading Actor for his performance as Dr. Adam Kay in the NHS-based mini-series This is Going to Hurt. This was his third BAFTA success after previously winning for his roles in The Hollow Crown and A Very English Scandal.

However, This is Going to Hurt surprisingly lost out on the Best Mini-Series award which went to the music-based drama Mood.

One of the most popular wins came in the Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme category as teenage star Lenny Rush prevailed for his hysterical role in the dark comedy Am I Being Unreasonable?.

Elsewhere, Adeel Ahktar secured a second BAFTA victory for his supporting turn in Sherwood while the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment award went to Paddington Bear having tea with the late Queen during the Platinum Jubilee: Party At The Palace celebrations.

It was also a terrific evening for reality competition series The Traitors as it took home Best Reality Series while host Claudia Winkleman scooped the Best Entertainment Performance gong.

The rest of the notable winners on the night included Casualty (Best Soap & Continuing Drama), Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (Best International), The Masked Singer (Best Entertainment Programme), Friday Night Live (Best Comedy Entertainment Programme), The Real Mo Farah (Best Single Documentary), UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 (Best Sport), and Platinum Jubilee: Party at the Palace (Best Live Event).

The BAFTA Fellowship award was presented to British-Asian actress and writer Meera Syal while comedy duo Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett shared presenting duties for this year’s ceremony.

However, it was a disappointing night for shows like The Responder and Big Boys as they both went home empty-handed despite multiple nominations.
