2019 Golden Globe (film) nominations: Vice and A Star is Born dominate

With Christmas almost here, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have given us film fanatics an early present with their nominations for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards.

The political biopic Vice is the leader of the pack with a hefty six nods, including the coveted Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) accolade.

The film, which explores the life and career of former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney, also scored a hat-trick of acting noms for its cast, with Christian Bale acknowledged in the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) line-up for his portrayal of Cheney.

Co-stars Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell are in contention for supporting gongs for their respective turns as Lynne Cheney and President George W. Bush, while filmmaker Adam McKay is recognised for both his directing, and writing.

Fellow fact-based films The Favourite and Green Book also impressed with five mentions apiece, including a place on the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical).

In the case of The Favourite, the historical dramedy secured a hat-trick of noms for its cast, with British performer Olivia Colman contesting Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for her portrayal of Queen Anne while co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are both up for Best Supporting Actress.

For Green Book, the comedy drama bagged acting nods for Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, while Peter Farrelly gained double mentions for his writing and directing.

The rest of the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) line-up is completed by the long-anticipated Disney musical sequel Mary Poppins Returns, and the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians.

From the former, British star Emily Blunt is acknowledged in the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) category for her portrayal of magical nanny Mary Poppins, while Broadway favourite Lin-Manuel Miranda is up for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical).

The other notable stars in contention for the comedy acting accolades include Robert Redford (The Old Man and the Gun), John C. Reilly (Stan & Ollie), Charlize Theron (Tully), and Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians).

On the dramatic side of things, it was a terrific day for A Star is Born, as the latest remake of the music-based drama landed five nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama).

Hollywood star Bradley Cooper scored double nominations for his directing and lead role, while co-star Lady Gaga is in contention for the Best Actress (Drama) gong.

Additionally, the film’s chart-topping track “Shallow” is a strong favourite to win the Best Original Song category.

The crime drama BlackKklansman also fared well with four noms including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and a Best Director nod for filmmaker Spike Lee, while rookie stars John David Washington and Adam Driver are acknowledged for their performances.

Despite being deemed a critical disappointment upon its release, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody secured a place on the Best Motion Picture (Drama) Shortlist, while leading man Rami Malek earns a Best Actor (Drama) nomination for his portrayal of celebrated singer Freddie Mercury.

The hit Marvel blockbuster Black Panther and the indie drama If Beale Street Could Talk are the remaining films to secure a Best Motion Picture (Drama) mention.

Elsewhere, the Mexican drama Roma scored three mentions, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director for previous category winner Alfonso Cuarón, while Glenn Close and Melissa McCarthy secured Best Actress (Drama) nods for their respective performances in The Wife and Can You Ever Forgive Me?.

The other major stars to receive acting nominations include Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased), Nicole Kidman (Destroyer), Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), and British stars Claire Foy (First Man), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Rosamund Pike (A Private War).

Meanwhile, the Best Animated Film line-up sees Pixar’s Incredibles 2 and Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet up against the likes of Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs, and the Marvel hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse while Germany’s Never Look Away and Japan’s Shoplifters are among the international features in contention for Best Foreign Language Film.

As to be expected, there were several notable acting snubs including Viola Davis (Widows), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), Ryan Gosling (First Man), and Ethan Hawke (First Reformed).

The 76th Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday 6 January 2019, with actors Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh on co-hosting duties.
