On Boxing Day 2004, the world was left in shock and horror as a giant tsunami struck the south of Asia killing over 200,000 people. It was one of the biggest tragedies in humanity. Since that fateful event, the continent has managed to recover although HBO and BBC did cause some controversy when they made a mini-series called Tsunami: The Aftermath which came out just a couple of years after the devastation.
Almost ten years later, a big-screen version of the tragedy has finally been made courtesy of Spanish director Juan Antonio Boyara (The Orphanage) who helms the survival epic The Impossible which has just released its latest trailer.
Naomi Watts (21 Grams, King Kong) and Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Star Wars prequels) star as a British couple vacating in Thailand with their three children who get caught up in the disaster and try to deal with the aftermath.
The film has already made an impact at the Toronto Film Festival for which it received positive reviews (especially for its acting) and could be a big player in the Oscar race. Sentimental films are right up my alley so this is one I’ll look forward to plus it’ll be interesting to see how the devastating event plays out on the big screen.
The Impossible is set for a January 2013 release in the UK.
