As enthusiastic film fans (including myself) await the Oscar nominations tomorrow afternoon, BAFTA have built up the anticipation by announcing their nominees for 2013.
For this year’s ceremony, the British film organisation have handed the most nods to Steven Spielberg’s historical drama Lincoln with a healthy ten including the prestigious Best Film prize.
As expected, Daniel Day-Lewis earns a Leading Actor mention for his portrayal of President Abraham Lincoln, while co-stars Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field are shortlisted in the supporting acting categories. Despite the film’s dominant haul, Spielberg himself was surprisingly overlooked for his work behind the camera.
Meanwhile, the musical epic Les Misérables performed well with nine mentions including Best Film and Outstanding British Film, while stars Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are in contention for Leading Actor and Supporting Actress respectively.
The fantasy drama Life of Pi is also in contention for nine awards, including Best Film, which is rounded off by fact-based thrillers Argo (with seven noms), and Zero Dark Thirty (with five noms).
Elsewhere, the James Bond blockbuster Skyfall scored an impressive eight nods including Outstanding British Film where it is shortlisted alongside the historical romance Anna Karenina, the comedy-drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and the dark comedy Seven Psychopaths.
Additionally, Skyfall also earned double acting nods for Dame Judi Dench and Javier Bardem, as well as multiple recognition in the technical categories.
Meanwhile, Ben Affleck receives two BAFTA nominations for his directing of Argo, and a shock Leading Actor nomination for his portrayal of CIA officer Tony Mendez. Maverick filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is also in contention for two prizes for writing and directing the brutal western drama Django Unchained.
As expected, the Leading Actress field is contested by early Oscar favourites Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) as well as Dame Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) and French duo Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone) and Emmanuelle Riva (Amour).
The rest of the notable acting nominees including Amy Adams (The Master), Alan Arkin (Argo), Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), Helen Hunt (The Sessions), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master), and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained).
Meanwhile, the French drama Amour is a heavy favourite to win Best Film Not in the English Language, while Pixar’s Brave and Disney’s Wreck-It-Ralph go head-to-head with ParaNorman in the Animated Film category.
As previously revealed, the EE Rising Star award will be contested by four actresses including British starlets Andrea Riseborough and Juno Temple as well as Indian newcomer Suraj Sharma.
In terms of notable acting omissions, the likes of Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained), John Hawkes (The Sessions), Dame Maggie Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Denzel Washington (Flight), Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Rachel Weisz (The Deep Blue Sea) were completely ignored by the British Academy.
Once again, the EE BAFTAs will be hosted by Stephen Fry, with the event taking place at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday 10 February.
