The best of television been recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association following the announcement of today’s nominees.
HBO’s Big Little Lies dominates this year’s line-up with six mentions, including the important Best Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category.
The other five noms are reserved for the miniseries’ impressive cast, with leading ladies Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon shortlisted together in the Best Actress (Limited Series/TV Movie) field.
Additionally, co-stars Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley compete in the Best Supporting Actress category, while Alexander Skarsgård is up for Best Supporting Actor.
Big Little Lies faces opposition from FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan, which picked up four nods, including Best Limited Series/Television Movie.
The miniseries, which explores the well-documented rivalry between Hollywood legends Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, also scored acting noms for stars Jessica Lange (as Crawford) and Susan Sarandon (as Davis) while British performer Alfred Molina is also acknowledged for his supporting turn as director Robert Aldrich.
The rest of the Best Limited Series/Television Movie category is contested by the third series of FX’s Fargo, as well as USA Network’s The Sinner and SundanceTV’s Top of the Lake: China Girl.
British duo Ewan McGregor (Fargo) and Jude Law (The Young Pope) are in contention for the Best Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie) gong alongside Oscar winners Robert De Niro (The Wizard of Lies) and Geoffrey Rush (Genius).
In the drama fields, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and NBC’s This is Us performed well with three mentions apiece and are both are up for the coveted Best Television Series (Drama) accolade, which is rounded up by HBO’s Game of Thrones and Netflix duo The Crown and Stranger Things.
After landing Best Actress (Drama) last year, British star Claire Foy will be looking to score a repeat win for her returning portrayal of royal monarch Queen Elizabeth II.
However, she faces stern competition from category favourite Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) as well as new contenders Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Deuce) and Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why).
In the Best Actor (Drama) line-up, British rookie Freddie Highmore is acknowledged for his role in ABC’s The Good Doctor and competes against big names like Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).
Finally, nostalgic sitcom fans will be happy to see NBC’s Will & Grace back in Globes contention for the first time since 2005 after earning two nominations for its comeback series, including Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical).
The 90s-born sitcom competes for the main prize alongside ABC’s Black-ish and a trio of new programmes in the form of Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Netflix’s Master of None and Showtime’s SMILF.
In the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) line-up, Will & Grace star Eric McCormack is up against returning nominees Anthony Anderson (Black-ish) and William H. Macy (Shameless) as well as new contenders Aziz Ansari (Master of None) and Kevin Bacon (I Love Dick).
Meanwhile, the surprise absence of multi-Emmy-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) means that the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) category will be contested by a mix of underrated stars including Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Alison Brie (GLOW) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).
The rest of the notable acting contenders include Caitríona Balfe (Outlander), Jessica Biel (The Sinner), Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale), David Harbour (Stranger Things), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Chrissy Metz (This is Us), Michelle Pfeiffer (The Wizard of Lies), Issa Rae (Insecure), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Frankie Shaw (SMILF), Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) and David Thewlis (Fargo).
Once again, the Globes overlooked big programmes like The Americans, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Veep while the high-profile acting snubs included Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Carrie Coon (Fargo), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Keri Russell (The Americans), Winona Ryder (Stranger Things), Matt Smith (The Crown), Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) and last year’s Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) winner Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish).
