Blue is the Warmest Colour wins Palme d’Or at Cannes 2013

After ten days of cheers and boos, Hollywood talent and glorious weather, the 2013 Cannes Film Festival has finally come to an end with the expert jury selecting their winners for the main awards.

This year, they made the bold choice of giving the Palme d’Or to the controversial lesbian drama, Blue is the Warmest Colour.

Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, the three-hour French film focuses on the erotic relationship between two women played by Adele Exarchopoulos and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol actress Léa Seydoux. Despite its critical acclaim, it has raised a few eyebrows with its explicit sex scenes (not that this writer is bothered!).

The director and his two leading ladies all received awards as part of the film’s achievement.

The Grand Jury Prize (the runner-up honour) was given to the Coen Bros’ folk-music comedy Inside Llewyn Davis, while Amat Escalante won the Best Director accolade for his helming of the Mexican-drama Heli.

Veteran actor Bruce Dern was named Best Actor for his role as an ageing alcoholic who tries to bond with his estranged son in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, while The Artist star Bérénice Bejo won Best Actress for her performance as a woman who cheats on her Iranian husband with another man in The Past.

The jury this year consisted of two-time Oscar winning directors Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee, as well as Oscar-winning actors Nicole Kidman and Christoph Waltz.
