The nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.
Starting with drama, Netflix’s The Crown leads its field with a dominant 24 nods that include eleven in the major categories.
The fourth series of the historical drama contests another lucrative Outstanding Drama Series line-up that includes a mix of returning shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and The Mandalorian, and new contenders The Boys, Bridgerton, and Lovecraft Country.
Furthermore, The Crown has also received seven acting noms for its cast, with Olivia Colman and newcomer Emma Corrin fighting it out in Lead Actress for their respective portrayals of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana.
For his performance as Prince Charles, Josh O’Connor is shortlisted in Lead Actor alongside previous category winners Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) and Billy Porter (Pose) while Tobias Menzies is acknowledged in Supporting Actor for playing Prince Phillip.
Finally, female trio Gillian Anderson, Helena Bonham Carter and surprise includer Emerald Fennell are all nominated together in Supporting Actor for their respective portrayals of Margaret Thatcher, Princess Margaret and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
Meanwhile, the fourth series of Hulu’s dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale picked up multiple acting nods for its ensemble, including another Lead Actress spot for Elisabeth Moss and supporting mentions for the likes of co-stars Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Bradley Whitford.
For the second year in a row, Disney Plus’s Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian racked up a bucket load of nominations with 24 including Outstanding Drama Series and a Supporting Actor nod for Giancarlo Esposito.
In terms of new drama contenders, HBO’s Lovecraft Country fared well with eighteen mentions including a posthumous nomination for the late Michael K. Williams, while Netflix’s Bridgerton also delivered with multiple nods including a Lead Actor acknowledgement for star Regé-Jean Page.
Meanwhile, Lead Actress nominee Michaela Jaé Rodriguez makes history by became the first transgender person to be nominated for a major acting Emmy Award for playing Bianca Rodriguez in the final series of FX’s Pose.

Over in comedy, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso has become the most-nominated first-year comedy series in the awards’ history, with a staggering twenty nominations.
The football-based sitcom contests the Outstanding Comedy Series category alongside HBO Max duo The Flight Attendant and Hacks, and Netflix trio Cobra Kai, Emily in Paris, and The Kominsky Method.
For his role as folksy football coach Ted Lasso, chief star Jason Sudeikis is a heavy favourite for the Lead Actor gong, where he faces off against the likes of Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method) and William H. Macy (Shameless).
Additionally, female co-stars Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham go head-to-head in the Supporting Actress category, while quartet Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed and Jeremy Swift are all shortlisted in Supporting Actor.
Elsewhere, HBO Max’s Hacks is up for several major awards, including a Lead Actress nod for headline star Jean Smart and supporting mentions for co-stars Hannah Einbinder and Carl Clemons-Hopkins.
Meanwhile, comedy duo Kenan Thompson and Aidy Bryant receive double nominations for their respective lead roles in Kenan and Shrill, as well as supporting nods for their appearances in NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Fellow cast members Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong and Bowen Yang are also recognised for their work on the long-running sketch series.

Finally, the race for the limited series awards are well contested by two strong candidates in the form of Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, and HBO’s Mare of Easttown.
Gambit, which follows an aspiring chess prodigy and her struggles with alcohol and drugs, is up for eighteen gongs, including the prestigious Limited Series honour.
As expected, rising starlet Anya Taylor-Joy is nominated in the Lead Actress category for her role as Beth Harmon, while co-stars Moses Ingram and Thomas Brodie-Sangster are acknowledged for their supporting turns.
In the case of Mare, the crime drama receives sixteen nods that include a Lead Actress nom for former category winner Kate Winslet for her performance as a detective investigating a shock murder in her small town.
Co-stars Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson and double nominee Jean Smart also receive mentions for their supporting roles in the acclaimed series.
However, the most nominations for a limited series have come from Disney Plus’s WandaVision with 23. As well as being up for the main prize, the Marvel spin-off series also bagged a hat-trick of acting nods for stars Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany and Kathryn Hahn.
Elsewhere, British star Michaela Coel is in contention for three Emmys for her work on the gritty Outstanding Limited Series nominee I May Destroy You.
The BAFTA winner is acknowledged for her writing and co-directing of the miniseries, as well as her lead role as sexual assault victim Arabella. Fellow cast member Paapa Essiedu also receives a mention in the Supporting Actor category.
Meanwhile, the live stage recording of the hit 2015 Broadway musical Hamilton is up for multiple acting honours including lead nods for Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr., as well as supporting noms for co-stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff and Anthony Ramos.

With some COVID-19 restrictions still in place, this year’s ceremony will be held at the Event Deck at L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday 19 September with Cedric the Entertainer tapped as host.
