A poignant trailer has premiered for Elsinore.

The upcoming factual drama sees BAFTA-winner Andrew Scott (Sherlock, All of Us Strangers) step into the shoes of Scottish actor Ian Charleson who was best known for his role as Olympic athlete Eric Liddell in the Oscar-winning sports drama Chariots of Fire (1981).

Helmed by Simon Stone (The Dig, The Woman in Cabin 10), the film focuses on Charleson’s performances as Hamlet at the National Theatre in the final months of his life, and the odds he faced in preparing for the role while struggling with a tragic AIDS diagnosis.

Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Father) also features in the film along with Billie Piper (Doctor Who, I Hate Suzie), Sadie Soverall (Saltburn, The Gathering), Johnny Flynn (Emma., One Life), Luke Thompson (Misbehaviour, Bridgerton), Monica Dolan (Appropriate Adult, Mr Bates vs the Post Office), Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly, Deeply, Being Julia), Joe Locke (Heartstopper, Agatha All Along), Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game, The Testament of Ann Lee), David Dawson (The Road to Coronation Street, The Last Kingdom), Dickie Beau (Colette, Bohemian Rhapdosy), Kadiff Kirwan (Everyone Else Burns, Slow Horses), Georgie Glen (Waterloo Road, Call the Midwife) and Peter Mullan (Tyrannosaur, I Swear).

The film has already made a big splash with critics after its recent world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival with Scott earning rave reviews for his portrayal of Charleson.

In the meantime, Elsinore will make its bow in UK cinemas on 29 January 2027.
