As awards season begins to intensify, the Screen Actors Guild have added to the drama with their nominations for both the big AND small screen.
In the film categories, the cinematic adaptation of the fantasy musical Wicked leads the way with an impressive five nods, including a crucial place on the Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture shortlist.
As expected, British star Cynthia Erivo earns a Leading Female Actor nom for her performance as misunderstood green-skinned witch Elphaba while co-star and musician Ariana Grande contests the Supporting Female Actor field for her turn as the caring Galinda.
More surprisingly, Jonathan Bailey scores a Supporting Male Actor nod for his turn as Prince Fiyero with the film also up for the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize.
The music-based factual drama A Complete Unknown also delivered on the nomination front with four mentions, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast and a hat-trick of nods for its cast.
Once again, Timothée Chalamet is acknowledged in the Leading Male Actor field for his portrayal of celebrated musician Bob Dylan, while co-stars Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro are recognised for their supporting turns as singers Joan Baez and Pete Seeger.
Wicked and A Complete Unknown are joined in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast line-up by the indie comedy Anora, the papal thriller Conclave and the diverse Golden Globe-winning musical Emilia Pérez.
Following her own success at the Globes on Sunday, Demi Moore will look to continue her bid for Oscar glory after earning a Leading Female Actor nod for her performance in the horror satire The Substance.
Fellow Best Actress contenders Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) and Mikey Madison (Anora) are also name-checked, with the fifth slot surprisingly taken by Pamela Anderson for her role as a seasoned showgirl in the indie drama The Last Showgirl.
Elsewhere, Adrien Brody heads the Leading Male Actor category with his performance in The Brutalist with Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) and British stars Daniel Craig (Queer) and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) among his rival nominees.
Meanwhile, recent Globe winners Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) are hoping to bolster their Oscar chances after landing repeat nods in their respective supporting categories.
Their competition in those fields include Yura Borisov (Anora), Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl), Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).
Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble line-up sees the aforementioned Wicked lock horns with the Marvel blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, the action comedy The Fall Guy and blockbuster sequels Dune: Part Two and Gladiator II.
Once again, this year’s nominations brought a high number of surprise acting omissions, with Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Angelina Jolie (Maria), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), Denzel Washington (Gladiator II), Kate Winslet (Lee) and Golden Globe winner Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) among those to miss out.
The 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall on 24 February and will be streamed live on Netflix.
