With the Oscar nominations due to arrive next week, BAFTA have contributed their own set of diverse nods ahead of the conclusion to another frenetic awards season.
The sci-fi epic Dune leads the pack with a hefty eleven mentions, which include a place on the Best Film shortlist.
The big-screen adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel is also up for multiple technical gongs, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Music.
However, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is surprisingly overlooked in a juried Best Director category that brings a quartet of bold contenders in Audrey Diwan (Happening), Julia Ducournau (Titane), Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) and Aleem Khan (After Love).
The western drama The Power of the Dog continued its impressive showing throughout this awards season with eight nods, including Best Film and Best Director for auteur Jane Campion.
Once again, British star Benedict Cumberbatch contests the Leading Actor field, while co-stars Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee both shortlisted for Best Supporting Actor.
The autobiographical drama Belfast also performed admirably with BAFTA by garnering six noms including double mentions in both Best Film, and Outstanding British Film.
Additionally, filmmaker Kenneth Branagh earns an Original Screenplay nod, while cast members Caitríona Balfe and Ciarán Hinds are in contention for the supporting accolades.
The rest of the Best Film field is made up by the political satire Don’t Look Up and the indie comedy Licorice Pizza.
In the acting categories, Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up) and Will Smith (King Richard) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up) contest a stellar Leading Actor field alongside Mahershala Ali (Swansong), and British stars Adeel Akhtar (Ali & Ava) and Stephen Graham (Boiling Point).
In contrast, the Leading Actress line-up brought a surprising number of snubs, including Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) and Kristen Stewart (Spencer).
However, this bodes well for fellow awards contender Lady Gaga, as she lands a nod for her portrayal of Italian socialite Patrizia Reggiani in the factual drama House of Gucci.
British starlet Emilia Jones (CODA) and TV BAFTA winner Joanna Scanlan (After Love) are also included in the Leading Actress category alongside Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) and American duo Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza) and Tessa Thompson (Passing).
Meanwhile, Ariana DeBose finds herself in contention for both the EE Rising Star award AND Best Supporting Actress prize for her performance as Anita in the musical remake West Side Story.
Her competition is rounded up by fellow American performers Ann Dowd (Mass) and Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) as well as Irish actresses Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), and Ruth Negga (Passing).
The Supporting Actor line-up sees child prodigy Woody Norman surprisingly shortlisted for his role in the indie drama C’Mon C’Mon with deaf actor Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Mike Faist (West Side Story) among his rival nominees.
Elsewhere, the James Bond blockbuster No Time to Die is up for multiple BAFTAs including Outstanding British Film where it competes against the likes of After Love, Boiling Point, Cyrano, Last Night in Soho, and Passing.
Additionally, new Bond star Lashana Lynch finds herself in contention for the public-voted EE Rising Star Award that is also contested by fellow British rookie Harris Dickinson and deaf actress Millicent Simmonds.
Meanwhile, Disney’s Encanto, and Pixar’s Luca go head-to-head with the documentary Flee in the Best Animated Film category, while international efforts like Drive My Car, Parallel Mothers and The Worst Person in the World are shortlisted for the Best Film Not in the English Language prize.
As well those multiple Leading Actress snubs, BAFTA also omitted performances from other notable acting contenders including Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Bradley Cooper (Licorice Pizza), Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick…Boom!), Jared Leto (House of Gucci), Vinette Robinson (Boiling Point), and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).
The 75th BAFTA Film Awards will take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 13 March with Australian comedian actress Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect trilogy) hosting for the first time.
