The Color Purple gets the musical remake treatment in official trailer for The Color Purple

An extravagant trailer has been unveiled for Warner Bros. Pictures’ new take on The Color Purple.

Based on the novel by Alice Walker and the musical stage play by Marsha Norman, the coming-of-age story also has the luxury of being produced by three key figures involved in the acclaimed 1985 film; star Oprah Winfrey, director Steven Spielberg and composer Quincy Jones!

Directed by Blitz Bazawule (The Burial of Koko, Black Is King), the plot focuses on the lifelong struggles of an African-American woman living in the Deep South during the 1900s and the unbreakable bond she shares with two other women.

The film’s exceptional cast features Taraji P. Henson (Empire, Hidden Figures) as Shug Avery, Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black, Peacemaker) as Sofia, Colman Domingo (Euphoria, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as Mister, Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton, BlacKkKlansman) as Harpo, H.E.R. (Yes Day, Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration) as Squeak, Halle Bailey (Grown-ish, The Little Mermaid) as Young Nettie, Aunjanue Ellis (Ray, King Richard) as Mama, Elizabeth Marvel (True Grit, Homeland) as Miss Millie, Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman, Watchmen) as Old Mister, and newcomer Fantasia Barrino as Celie.

The Color Purple will be released in the UK on 18 January 2024.
